In light of the series of earthquakes that have recently struck various parts of Mindanao โ including those felt across the Caraga Region โ we, the undersigned Student Regents (SRs) and Student Trustees (STs) representing the State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) of Caraga Region โ namely Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT), Caraga State University (CSU), North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU), and Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) โ express our utmost concern and collectively call for the prompt implementation of precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of our academic communities.
We respectfully urge the administrations of ASSCAT, CSU, NEMSU and SNSU to suspend all face-to-face classes starting next week and to temporarily adopt asynchronous learning modalities until aftershocks have fully subsided and the safety of all campus facilities has been verified. The continued conduct of in-person classes amid persistent seismic activity poses significant risks to students, faculty, and staff.
We strongly recommend the immediate and thorough inspection of all university and college infrastructures โ including classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, and other essential facilities to assess possible structural damage and ensure that these remain safe for occupancy. The physical integrity and safety of our campuses must be prioritized above all else.
Beyond physical safety, we underscore the importance of protecting the mental and emotional well-being of our students. We call on our respective administrations to extend psychosocial support services, maintain transparent communication channels, and provide reasonable academic flexibility as many members of our community continue to recover from the effects of the earthquake.
Our united appeal is anchored in compassion, precaution, and responsibility. Education must always uphold and protect human safety and dignity. In these challenging times, we stand in solidarity to ensure that the welfare of every Iskolar ng Bayan remains at the heart of all institutional decisions.
