In anticipation of possible aftershocks and pending the completion of ongoing structural assessments, government offices in Davao City, including local government offices and national government agencies, shall adopt a work-from-home arrangement tomorrow, June 9, 2026, EXCEPT for offices providing safety and security, health, sanitation, traffic management, social services, and disaster and emergency response services.

The private sector is encouraged to adopt similar arrangements to ensure the welfare and safety of their employees.

Face-to-face classes at all levels in both public and private educational institutions shall remain suspended tomorrow, June 9, 2026, pending the completion of safety inspections.

Educational institutions are encouraged to adopt online or distance learning modalities to ensure the welfare and safety of their students and personnel.

The opening of classes is a time of hope, excitement, and new beginnings. Students arrive with dreams and aspirations, while teachers welcome them with open hearts and a commitment to guide them throughout the school year.

At Don Julian Rodriguez Sr. Elementary School, what began as a day of celebration quickly turned into a test of courage and compassion.

As teachers and students gathered inside the school gymnasium for the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, an unexpected disaster struck. Without warning, a powerful earthquake, initially assessed at a magnitude of 6.7, shook the ground beneath them.

Fear and uncertainty filled the air as the tremors intensified. In those crucial moments, every second mattered. The instinct to seek personal safety would have been understandable. Yet the teachers of Don Julian Rodriguez Sr. Elementary School chose a different path.

Instead of thinking of themselves, they thought of their students.

With remarkable bravery, teachers stayed beside the children entrusted to their care. They embraced frightened students, offered words of reassurance, and guided them calmly toward safety. Amid the chaos, they became protectors, leaders, and sources of strength. Their actions reflected the true meaning of being an educator—not only teaching lessons in the classroom but also demonstrating courage and selflessness when it mattered most.

Many students found comfort in the arms of their teachers as the earthquake continued. Others were carefully led through evacuation routes by teachers who remained focused despite the danger surrounding them. Their unwavering dedication ensured that students were protected during one of the most frightening moments of their young lives.

The heroism displayed that day extended beyond the school grounds. Members of the community immediately came together to support the evacuation efforts. Residents and volunteers helped clear pathways, remove obstacles, and ensure that students could be safely guided away from harm. Their swift response and willingness to help demonstrated the power of unity during times of crisis.

In moments of disaster, true character is revealed. The earthquake may have shaken buildings and unsettled hearts, but it also revealed the extraordinary courage of the teachers and the compassion of the community.

To the teachers of Don Julian Rodriguez Sr. Elementary School, thank you for placing the safety and well-being of your students above your own. Your dedication, courage, and love for the children under your care embody the highest ideals of the teaching profession.

To the members of the community who helped clear the way and assisted in the safe evacuation of students, thank you for your generosity, cooperation, and unwavering support.

Don Julian Rodriguez Sr. Elementary School warmly welcomes all our students, parents, and stakeholders as we begin the School Year 2026–2027.

Despite the sudden earthquake, our school community remained united, helping one another and ensuring everyone's safety. We are grateful that all are safe and well.
