Strengthening Global Partnerships for Impactful Education and Research

Sorsogon State University (SorSU) recently held an exploratory meeting with Dr. Venkat Bakthavatchaalam of Cardiff University, United Kingdom, to discuss a more comprehensive partnership and formally propose a Visiting Professor Engagement, including a potential physical visit to Sorsogon City Campus, Philippines.

Recognizing Dr. Venkat’s significant contributions to Peace Engineering and SDG Literacy, SorSU sees strong potential to align his expertise with the university’s strategic mandates. Several key areas for collaboration were identified:

🔹 Academic & Instruction – Specialized lectures for faculty on integrating SDG competencies and peace engineering into technical curricula
🔹 Research & Benchmarking – Development of joint research initiatives, publications, and benchmarking of SorSU’s Research, Extension, and Training (RET) agenda against global standards
🔹 Extension & Community Engagement – Field visits to extension sites to explore practical applications in community transformation
🔹 Institutional Partnership – Proposed signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support long-term faculty exchange

This initiative reflects SorSU’s continued commitment to internationalization, innovation, and fostering globally relevant academic collaborations.

📚 This important study explores the diverse ecological, cultural, and livelihood connections between smallholder agroforestry farmers and endemic pili trees in the Philippines. The research offers valuable insights into how traditional knowledge, sustainable farming practices, and human-nature relationships contribute to biodiversity conservation and rural development.

Through this publication, the authors contribute meaningfully to the fields of ethnobiology, environmental sustainability, and community-based resource management—emphasizing the significance of indigenous and local perspectives in protecting natural heritage.

This research supports the advancement of global sustainability efforts, particularly 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟭𝟱 (𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱) by promoting biodiversity conservation, 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟮 (𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿)
through sustainable agroforestry livelihoods, and 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟭𝟯 (𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻) by recognizing the role of tree-based farming systems in environmental resilience.

Sorsogon State University successfully conducted an introductory meeting today with the Program Deans, IRO coordinators and representatives from Kun Shan University, Taiwan for the initial presentation of the INTENSE Program.

The session served as a platform to discuss potential academic collaborations, partnership opportunities, and future initiatives between both institutions, including possible student and faculty engagements. This marks an important step toward strengthening internationalization efforts and fostering global academic partnerships for Sorsogon State University. 🌍🤝🇵🇭🇹🇼
