"There are lots of students who I see on a weekly basis who are jam-packing their week with so many extracurricular activities that their studies are starting to suffer yet I also see others who thrive under pressure.

I also regularly come across students who have minimal obligations and don’t even know where to start when it comes to planning their day to day commitments (aside from making sure they have time to check their snapchat streaks)!

To me, there is one very distinct difference between my students who are busy and successful and my students who have too much time on their hands and failing: their time management

The point of this is that across the ‘busy’ spectrum, there’s an array of people. However, no matter what end you fall, your best way of advancing in your schooling, career or in your extra-curricular activities is to manage your time effectively.

Whether you consider yourself to be an overachiever, a procrastinator or a perfectionist to name a few, regardless, you need to know the ins and outs of your daily schedule to maximise your time! Here are a few handy tips and tricks that I recommend to my students when planning from week to week."

"What kind of technology do you use in your day to day life?

Think about it… How much do you rely on your mobile phone? How much do you use a desktop, laptop or tablet? Do you wear a smartwatch proudly on your wrist? Do you need to use these for work? To catch up love ones on the latest family scandal? Or tell your friends some juicy gossip? Maybe you use it for entertainment on the toilet? Hey, there’s no judgment here.

But seriously… it is undeniable that technological advancements over the last 30 years have transformed the world we live in. From advancements in science, medicine, communication, trade, transport… the list goes on and on. Technology has redefined efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity. It touches every part of our lives.

However, this change has led to an increased demand for new tech-savvy skills in the workforce. Inevitably, it was only a matter of time before the integration of technology in children education is altered from an option to a necessity.

“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow”

Gone are the days of just boring blackboards, tedious textbooks, and the practiced pencil on paper. Today, students need to be digital natives."

Oh no! I mean… oh yes! Finally, the holidays have ended, and the kids go back to school. But before we get peace and quiet between nine to three, we’ve got to get them ready. Now that is stressful.

Shoes, books, stationery, bags, tantrums, and waking up at seven AM! The weeks before school starts back can be a nightmare for parents. There are so many things to organise and so much to do! On top of everything else in life, it can seem impossible. Not just for parents, but for students too.

There are always nerves surrounding the return to school each year. Sometimes a new school, but always a new year level. This poses more, unprecedented challenges. But getting back into that routine is actually a good thing. Students not only get to see their friends again, but they also get structure. However, sometimes students can put up a fight, especially if they are young.

Taking them shopping for books can either be quick and easy or an all-day ordeal. It can be fun or torturous. As a result, students and parents end up leaving things to the last minute and put it off for as long as possible.

But with some easy tips, this stressful time can become a whole lot easier

For most of us, A’s are the name of the game. We all want to achieve the best grades possible! Going from a C student to an A student is the ultimate academic goal!

However, with such a focused goal, sometimes we don’t recognise the effects of reaching that goal. I’m not here to say that there are serious consequences for getting A’s. What I’m saying is… there are many unexpected changes that you might go through after achieving that goal, which can impact how well you keep your hard-earned grade!

I went from being a C student to an A student
You might be thinking, ‘who is this person and what do they know about achieving an A in Maths?’. Well, as someone who climbed two letter grades (from C’s to A’s) in Maths, I know a thing or two about how your work ethic and attitude changes once you start achieving well.

He’s just slack. She’s spending too much time on her phone, not on the books. He’s not as smart as the other kids in the class. Whether you’re telling yourself this or your child’s teacher is saying it to you, the reason for your child’s lack of progress may be more complex than “she’s just not that into school.” Study, like any other skill, takes instruction, support and practise to master. If your child’s study skills aren’t up to scratch, then their grades won’t be either. So, what can you do to help improve your child’s study skills at home?

Do you remember people’s faces while perhaps forgetting their names? Did you used to decorate your school books with colours and drawings? Is YouTube the greatest educational tool ever invented? Chances are you’re a visual learner who responds well to anything that engages your sense of sight.

Do you ever notice your child staring into space when you’re trying to demonstrate and explain something to them? Yes? There’s a good chance they might be an aural learner who is actually paying close attention to the words, while not engaging with your actions.

Are you always fidgeting? Maybe you’ve even invested in a stress ball? Do you like to get your hands dirty, finding yourself in your element learning new trades and crafts? Did you find school a little boring and hard to engage with, but have instead thrived in more flexible and hands-on environments in adulthood? In all likelihood you’re a kinaesthetic learner. You learn best by simply doing.

Once you’ve identified you or your child’s learning style, the next step is to understand its unique characteristics, and ways and means to get the most out it.

"Sometimes there’s just nothing more frustrating than seeing your child lacking in motivation, particularly when it comes to their schoolwork. Seeing them constantly leaving homework and assignments to the last minute, doing only the bare minimum in order to escape punishment. Or worse, not attempting it at all, and offering up “what’s the point?” or “who cares?” as justification. It can feel disheartening, and like they’re throwing away their talents and opportunities.

In truth, though, it’s very likely that your child isn’t actually unmotivated, but more the case that they are being motivated by the wrong things – like trying to show you that they won’t do what you want them or tell them to do, or some vague effort to prove the pointlessness of school. Often this kind of negative motivation stems from a power struggle between you and your child. They are growing up and seeking the independence that comes with that, and wanting to set and live by their own rules is a natural part of that.

So knowing now that your child does have the potential to be motivated, the secret is knowing how to unlock this potential, to drive them towards positive sources of motivation. Here are 9 tips and tricks to try to motivate your child:"

"In my role as an English tutor, I’ve too often had my students say to me, “It’s impossible to get an A in English.” As an English major at the University of Queensland, and someone who has, indeed, achieved the illustrious A-grade, I call this for what it is: folly.

The infamous A for English is not, as many believe, unattainable or impossible. In fact, it is quite within the realm of possibility for each and every student who is willing to put in the effort, and follow a certain set of ‘rules’ that most English subjects require.

“Rules?” I hear you ask. “English doesn’t have set rules – that’s why it’s impossible to get an A. It’s all… grey, while Maths and Physics and Sciences are black and white.”

While it is true that English is more subjective, rather than definitive, there are nonetheless elements that students can utilise to help them achieve a higher grade. Of these elements, there are 7 main ‘rules’ that students should follow to achieve that elusive A in English."

Today’s science teachers must be prepared to teach students whose first language is not English. In this section we reference ELL strategies and activities that are found throughout this book. The science classroom is often a frustrating place for English language learners. Science has a complex vocabulary that is difficult even for native English speakers to learn. Difficulty learning English should not be confused with an inability to think scientifically. Many of the strategies that are useful for English language learners are effective for differentiating instruction for other students as well. Each student comes to school, not only with unique academic needs, but also with unique background experiences, culture, language, personality, interests, and attitudes toward learning. Effective teachers recognize that all of these factors affect how students learn in the classroom, and they adjust, or differentiate, their instruction to meet students' needs. The goal of differentiated instruction is to create learning opportunities that make allowances for differences in how individual students learn in order to ensure equal access to important academic content. Content may be modified for students who need additional practice with essential elements before moving on; however, the expectation is that modifications in other areas will ultimately allow all students to master the same key content. It is important to recognize that differentiated instruction is an approach to teaching, not simply a collection of strategies or activities. Effective differentiation requires ongoing evaluation of students' needs and conscious attention to designing instructional activities and assessment to meet those needs. It is true that teachers must have an extensive repertoire of research-based instructional strategies at hand, but they must also be able to "think outside the box" to ensure that each student's needs are met. As Tomlinson and Imbeau (2010) point out, the teacher's role in the differentiated classroom is to continually ask him/herself, "What does this student need at this moment in order to be able to progress with this key content, and what do I need to do to make that happen?" (p. 14).
