For Gina G. Acuzar, teaching did not begin only when a child entered the classroom.

While serving as a special education teacher at Sogod Central School in Southern Leyte, she visited different barangays to find children with visual impairments, speak with their families, and encourage them to enroll in school.

She taught her learners to read and write through Braille, but her support extended far beyond their lessons.

Acuzar sought assistance from donors and organisations to help provide transportation, medical care, financial support, and livelihood training for people with disabilities.

Through her efforts, nine visually impaired learners received free eye examinations and cataract operations. One of them regained sight after surgery.

Transportation assistance was also secured for 20 children, while students and adults with visual and hearing impairments received massage therapy training that could help them earn a living.

Her work gave children more than access to a classroom. It gave them opportunities to learn, become independent, and build a future despite the barriers surrounding them.

For her dedication to public service, Maโ€™am Gina Acuzar received the 2017 Dangal ng Bayan Award.

The recognition was well deserved, but the children she brought into school and the lives she helped improve remain the clearest proof of her service.

Hats off to you, Maโ€™am Gina!
