Mangrove Ecosystem and Its Importance

I created this page to advocate for one of the most overlooked yet incredibly vital ecosystems on our planet: the mangrove.

Mangroves are more than just trees. They are natural guardians of our shorelines, nurseries for marine life, and carbon sinks that fight climate change. Yet every year, thousands of hectares of mangrove forests are lost due to development, pollution, and neglect.

This page is my humble attempt to raise awareness, spark conversations, and promote actions in protecting and restoring our mangrove ecosystems.

The table shows the comparison of aerial estimates of mangrove forests for the Philippines. Dates indicate the year of estimate.

This study demonstrates that through dedicated and intensive efforts in mangrove rehabilitation, we can restore our mangrove forests to their full potential. By implementing effective conservation strategies, we can rejuvenate these vital ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity and protecting coastal areas for future generations.

Section 43 of PD 705 or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines (1975) focuses on the protection and management of mangrove forests. Specifically, it mandates the preservation of mangrove forest strips bordering islands to act as natural barriers against coastal erosion and storm damage.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office continues to intensify the mangrove forest restoration and rehabilitation program.

They urged the public to take an active role in the rehabilitation and conservation of the country’s mangrove forests by helping validate on the ground the mangrove map created through satellite data.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will assess abandoned, undeveloped, and underutilized (AUU) fishponds to identify potential areas for mangrove restoration.

Section 99 of Republic Act 10654, also known as the Amended Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998, focuses on the conversion of mangroves. It prohibits the conversion of mangroves into fishponds or for any other purpose. Current programs related to Section 99 involve administrative and judicial penalties for violators, including fines and potential imprisonment, and mandates the restoration of damaged mangrove areas

THREATS TO MANGROVES
The culprits in the decline of our mangroves are many, but the primary one is conversion to aquaculture ponds and conversion to urban land reclamation and other land uses. If this trend continues, there will be virtually no mangroves left in the Philippines after another 50 years.
Aside from natural or indirect threats to mangroves, human interventions, mainly fishpond conversion caused the decline of mangrove forests in the country. Now, mangrove forests remaining along the Philippine coasts are of much lower quality than those found in the early centuries. Other causes of mangrove decline include reclamation of mangrove areas for various developments such as wharfs, piers, airports, housing and industrial zones; Pollution and siltation; Dikes and structures obstructing waterways and tidal inundation that disturbs the tidal flow; Overexploitation and utilization, including harvesting of mangrove trees for charcoal, timber and other uses; and disturbance due to gleaning, fish landing.

Forested mangrove area has decreased greatly in the Philippines from an estimated coverage of 450,000 hectares in 1918 to less than 120,000 hectares in the late 1990’s. The most rapid decrease in mangrove coverage happened during the 1960’s and 70’s when aquaculture was promoted by the national government.
