As a teacher and a Montessori directress, I have always been learning and unlearning different approaches. There are a lot of new trends in early childhood education that make us rethink our old methods. We all want the best for our children and students, which sometimes means reassessing our actions and the language we use as educators and parents.

Children are naturally curious and they thrive when allowed to explore. We used to believe that lots of verbal praise was the best way to support child development and encourage good behavior. However, recent insights suggest that too much praise might not always be beneficial.

Every child deserves love and care, regardless of their identity or circumstances. Labeling one child as good might imply that others are bad. These labels can be hurtful for young children. And do they understand what GOOD means? Do they know what made the parent or teacher happy?

We still use these phrases at home and in school. However, children should understand the message these phrases convey. Using these terms may not be effective because we want children to be motivated from within, rather than relying on outside rewards or praise. When children hear these too often without context, the praise can lose its meaning.

Here are some examples of how you might offer praise in a more meaningful way:

1. Describe or highlight what exactly has done well. Be specific.

I love how you used the yellow crayon to draw the sun. It looks beautiful!
I appreciate how you help your friend.

2. Praise or acknowledge the effort and process. Avoid focusing on the result.

You worked so hard on tying your shoelaces! That is a big step.
I saw you trying hard to work on that puzzle. I'm proud of how you kept on trying!

3. Celebrate progress and learning.

You have made a lot of progress in how you write. I can see how much you have improved.
You have learned so much about solving problems. I cannot wait to see how you apply this to new tasks.

4. Praise for problem-solving skills or creativity.

The way you came up with this tower with the building blocks. It is great to see you thinking outside the box.
I like how you talk to your friend about personal space. That is impressive problem-solving.

5. Encourage positive behavior.

I love how you show your friends what to do. It helps everyone work together better.
I appreciate how you wait for your turn. Your patience is admirable.

6. Motivate continued effort and growth.

You have done well on how you tidy up your belongings.
I am excited to see how you will set a good example to others.

Reflecting on these strategies can help children develop a deeper appreciation for their accomplishments and encourage them to seek intrinsic motivation.
