A tree in a city is infrastructure that grows, breathes, cools, and protectsโ€”for free.

Hotter cities. Worse floods. The missing link isn't complicatedโ€”it's the trees we cut down.

๐ŸŒณ The best air conditioner on Earth doesn't need electricity.

On a scorching summer day, step beneath a massive tree canopy and feel the difference.

No compressor.
No power bill.
No remote control.

Just leaves turning sunlight into shade and helping create a cooler place for people and wildlife.

We spent centuries engineering ways to escape the heatโ€ฆ while nature was growing the answer above our heads. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒณ

That familiar, deep moaning croak you hear outside your window on rainy nights? It might belong to the Asian Painted Frog Here in the Philippines, we might find them sitting beside drainage canals, hiding in gardens, or suddenly appearing after heavy rain.

But in the US exotic pet trade, this ordinary-looking frog is sold under the adorable name ๐—–๐—›๐—จ๐—•๐—•๐—ฌ ๐—™๐—ฅ๐—ข๐—š, and some unusual varieties can fetch surprisingly high prices.

While we barely look twice at them here, overseas enthusiasts keep and breed Chubby Frogs as exotic pets alongside other popular amphibians such as Pacman frogs. And if you think the regular one is cute, captive-bred color morphs are where things get interesting. A rare ๐—”๐—Ÿ๐—•๐—œ๐—ก๐—ข Chubby Frog can sell for around ๐—จ๐—ฆ $๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฌ!

That's roughly โ‚ฑ3,000 for the fancy version of a frog whose relatives might be hanging around your drainage after tonight's rain. Before anyone starts collecting frogs and opening an online shop, though, wild animals aren't automatically equivalent to captive-bred pet-trade specimens. Wildlife collection and trade can also be regulated.

Despite being a familiar sight in some Philippine communities, the Asian Painted Frog is ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ง ๐—ก๐—”๐—ง๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—˜ to the Philippines. It is an ๐—œ๐—ก๐—ง๐—ฅ๐—ข๐——๐—จ๐—–๐—˜๐—— species that has established populations in the country and has become well adapted to disturbed and human-modified environments.
This is also why introduced frogs deserve attention. Once established outside their natural range, non-native species may interact with native wildlife through competition, predation, disease transmission, or changes in local food webs.

Their cute nickname fits them perfectly. When threatened, Chubby Frogs can ๐—œ๐—ก๐—™๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—ง๐—˜ their already round bodies like tiny balloons. Becoming bigger and rounder can make them more difficult for a predator to swallow. But they have another trick.

When disturbed, they can release a ๐—ฆ๐—ง๐—œ๐—–๐—ž๐—ฌ, ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ซ๐—œ๐—ข๐—จ๐—ฆ skin secretion that helps discourage predators. Cute, round, and equipped with chemical defense. Not quite the harmless squishy potato it looks like. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Most of the time, they aren't sitting around waiting to become $50 celebrities.
Asian Painted Frogs are fossorial and spend much of their time concealed in soil, leaf litter, and other sheltered places. Then the rainy season arrives.

Warm, wet conditions bring them to the surface to breed, and males become ๐—›๐—œ๐—š๐—›๐—Ÿ๐—ฌ ๐—ฉ๐—ข๐—–๐—”๐—Ÿ, producing the distinctive calls that can suddenly fill an otherwise quiet night.

The Asian Painted Frog is also collected for food in parts of Southeast Asia.
However, remember that sticky defensive secretion? That's one reason proper identification, handling, cleaning, and preparation matter. Wild amphibians may also carry parasites and microorganisms, so "edible" doesn't automatically mean safe to collect and eat without appropriate precautions.

There's also an interesting conservation angle here.

Frogs are traditionally eaten in some Philippine communities, but our country is home to many ๐—ก๐—”๐—ง๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—˜ and ๐—˜๐—ก๐——๐—˜๐— ๐—œ๐—– species, some found nowhere else on Earth.

Where harvesting frogs for food occurs, properly identified introduced species like the Asian Painted Frog could potentially be studied as an alternative to putting additional pressure on native frog populations. In other words, if frogs are going on the menu anyway, perhaps it's worth asking whether we should be eating the introduced ones instead of the locals. ๐Ÿธ
