Kadalasang napagbabaligtad ang mga salitang hazard at disaster, ngunit mahalagang malaman na sila'y magkaiba. Hindi lahat ng hazard ay nagreresulta sa disaster, depende sa kahandaan ng komunidad at iba pang mga salik.

➡ 𝗛𝗔𝗭𝗔𝗥𝗗 - Ito ay isang natural na proseso, pangyayari, o aktbidad ng tao na posibleng magdulot ng masamang epekto sa mga tao, ari-arian, sistema, o kalikasan.

Ang mga hazard ay kadalasang inihahanay sa tatlong uri:

• Ang mga 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗟 na hazard ay tumutukoy sa mga natural na proseso o kaganapan sa kalikasan, tulad ng mga bagyo at lindol.

• Ang 𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗢𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗖 naman ay mga kagagawan ng tao, tulad ng pagkatapon ng langis.

• Ang 𝗦𝗢𝗖𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗟 naman ay mga hazard na maituturing na resulta ng parehong natural at kagagawan ng mga tao, tulad ng mga hazard na maiuugnay sa climate change

⚠️ Depende sa iba’t ibang mga salik, posibleng mauwi sa disaster kapag ang hazard ay naranasan sa isang komunidad.

➡ 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 - Ito ang malalang pagkagambala ng isang komunidad o lipunan dahil sa isa o higit pang mga hazard na may kaakibat na masamang epekto sa mga tao, ari-arian, at kalikasan.

Ang mga disaster ay kadalasan ring nahahanay sa depende sa lawak at tagal nito.

• Ang 𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗟-𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗘 na disaster ay mga sakuna na nakakaapekto lamang sa isang komunidad,

• Ang 𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗘-𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗘 naman kapag malawakan na ang apektado at kadalasang nangangailangan na ng tulong ng ibang mga bansa.

• May mga disaster namang tinatawag na 𝗦𝗟𝗢𝗪-𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗧 o mga sakunang unti-unting lumalabas o lumalala sa paglipas ng panahon, tulad ng pagtaas ng lebel ng tubig, tagtuyot, at iba pang matagalang mga proseso.

• Ang mga lindol, pagputok ng bulkan ay maituturing na SUDDEN-ONSET disaster na mabilisan ang pangyayari at epekto sa mga komunidad.

⚠️ Ang disaster ay kadalasang resulta ng kawalan ng isang komunidad na harapin ang epekto ng mga hazard.

Ngayong International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, ating patuloy na alamin ang mga hazard na posibleng makaapekto sa ating komunidad at bansa at paigtingin pa ang kahandaan upang hindi ito agad mauwi sa isang malalang disaster.
