🌾✨ FROM SEEDS OF DREAMS TO A FUTURE READY TO GROW.

With every lesson learned, challenge faced, and dream nurtured, 204 fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness (BSAB) students took another step toward becoming the future of the agribusiness industry.

On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the 6th BSAB Pinning Ceremony was held at the Municipal Cultural and Recreational Gymnasium of Santo Tomas College of Agriculture, Sciences, and Technology, carrying the theme:

"Cultivating Knowledge, Growing Leaders, Harvesting Success: Pinned for the Future of Agribusiness."🌱

NOT EVERYTHING ON SINGKAMAS BELONGS ON YOUR PLATE🌾

Beneath the brown, papery skin of Singkamas (Ppachyrhizus erosus) lies it's crisp, water-rich, the part commonly eaten as food. But this seemingly harmless root crop has a darker side. It's seeds, leaves, the outer layer of the flesh, and other non-edible parts contain rotenone, a naturally occurring compound that can be toxic and acts as natural insecticide. When eating Singkamas, peel it first and stick to the flesh, because this refreshing root crop comes with a built-in chemical warning.🌾🌱

From Tree to Treatment🌱

A peer-reviewed study published in 2026 found that malunggay (Moringa oleifera) seeds may offer a natural way to remove microplastics from water. In the study, biochemical engineers made a saline extract from the seeds and tested it in laboratory water mixed with aged polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics. Under the best test conditions, the extract removed 98.5% of the plastic particles.

The researchers also compared the seed extract with aluminum sulfate (alum), a chemical commonly used in water treatment. Using the same pH conditions, alum removed 98.7% of the microplastics, only slightly better than the malunggay extract.

The extract does not break down the plastics. Instead, natural proteins from the seeds carry a positive charge that attracts the negatively charged microplastic particles. As the particles stick together, they form larger clumps that are easier to remove through granular filtration.

The team also tried a simpler treatment method by adding the extract just before filtration, without using a separate flocculation step. This approach worked almost as well as the more complex process.

The findings suggest that proteins from malunggay seeds could become a more sustainable alternative to some synthetic chemicals used in water treatment. However, the researchers noted that their tests were done only on aged PVC microplastics in prepared, low-turbidity laboratory water. More studies are still needed to see if the method works on other types of microplastics and in real water sources. They also pointed out that any leftover organic material from the seed extract must be reduced before the method can be used on a larger scale.

Santo Tomas College of Agriculture, Sciences and Technology Shines at the Tagum Durian Industry Forum 2026!

On July 31, 2026, the Santo Tomas College of Agriculture, Sciences and Technology (STCAST) proudly participated in the Tagum Durian Industry Forum 2026, held as one of the highlights of the Durian Festival 2026 in Tagum City.

The forum served as an excellent platform for learning, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders in the durian industry. Together with the dedicated members of the Tagum City Durian Growers Association (TaCDUGA), hardworking durian farmers, and participants from the City Agriculture Office, our faculty and Agribusiness students gained valuable insights into the latest developments in durian production, value-adding, marketing, and sustainable industry practices.

This meaningful engagement strengthened the connection between the academe, government agencies, and local growers, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in advancing the durian industry and supporting the agricultural sector of Tagum City.

STCAST extends its sincere gratitude to the City Government of Tagum, the Tagum City Tourism Council, and all organizers for the opportunity to be part of this enriching event. We look forward to continuing our commitment to agricultural excellence, innovation, and community partnership.
