It means hello or good afternoon, and it’s commonly used from late morning until late afternoon in Japan.

You say Konnichiwa when:
• Meeting someone during the day
• Entering a store
• Greeting your teacher or coworker
• Starting a polite conversation

Even though it sounds like “wa,” it is written with は (ha) in Japanese: こんにちは
