It is believed that a great divinity known as Bathala created seven moons in the night sky but Bakunawa, who was astounded by the seven moons' light rising from the deep black oceanโswallowed one of the moons whole once every one hundred yearsโthus leading to eclipses and earthquakes, which caused a schism between her and Bathala.
People were frightened that if she ate all of the moons, the world would come to an end, so they came up with a plan. When there was only one moon left, Bakunawa leaped and locked her jaw around the beautiful ball of light, just when she was about to swallow itโthe people started pounding their pots, pans, and drumsโshe was greatly frightened. Bakunawa spit out the moon and crashed back into the ocean. And so every century, the people would bring their pots, pans, and drums to Bakunawaโs lair to stop it from swallowing the last moon.
