Welcome to the PUP Herbarium (PUPH)!

The PUP Herbarium (PUPH) is a research facility dedicated to the preservation, study, and documentation of Philippine plant diversity. It operates under the Research Institute for Science and Technology (RIST) of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development (OVPRED) at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines–A. Mabini Campus.

Formally established in 2016, PUPH began as a teaching and research collection built from herbarium specimens submitted by BS Biology students enrolled in Plant Systematics, alongside materials gathered during a 2015 flora survey of the PUP Main Campus. Since then, the herbarium has steadily grown in both size and scope through student donations, undergraduate field research, and the dedicated efforts of faculty curators.
Today, PUPH’s collections largely represent the flora of Luzon, with strong coverage from General Nakar in the southern Sierra Madre Mountain Range, Batangas, Laguna, Quezon Province, Ragay in Camarines Sur, and several island ecosystems including Verde Island and Oriental Mindoro.

To accommodate its expanding collections, PUPH relocated in August 2019 to a larger space on the third floor of the Engineering and Science Research Center (ESRC). The herbarium is currently managed by a team of curators led by Ma. Eleanor Calapatia-Salvador, MSc., and Dr. Armin S. Coronado. Visitors to PUPH will find a welcoming learning space featuring a reading area with field guides and reference books, educational displays on plant biology, a microscopy area for specimen study, and a special corner that houses the first wooden cabinet where the herbarium’s journey began.

Stay tuned as we continue to share the stories preserved within our collections. 🌿
