Happening this Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 2:00 - 3:15 pm
tags: Material Science, Optics, Pigments, Art History, Microscopy, Philippine paintings
We will be hosting a Webinar entitled: "The Science of Polarized Microscopy and Philippine Paintings". It describes polarized microscopy methods in identifying artist's pigments in order to determine the approximate age and authenticity of the paintings under investigation.
Our speaker will be Mr. Julian C. Tongson, Jr. who has obtained a graduate diploma and a graduate certificate in Cultural Heritage Studies and Art History, respectively, from the University of Santo Tomas. Together with Dean Cynthia Loza, he was first to introduce the co-teaching of Heritage Forensics at the UST Graduate School. He subsequently authored โThe Science and Material History of Philippine Paintings.โ His work was recognized and published by the Royal Microscopical Society in the United Kingdom in 2014 in the anniversary issue of Infocus, The Proceedings of the Royal Microscopical Society Issue 35.

[Nanotechnology]
[Scanning Electron Microscopy]
Happening Wednesday next week, April 27 at 2:00 pm - 4:10 pm. We will be having introductory lectures on nanotechnology and an overview of the Scanning Electron Microscopy. The lectures are open to undergraduate students and graduate student who may take interest in the topics.
The first ever microscope was invented in 1590 by two lens makers, Hans and Zacharias Janssen. Since then it has become an ubiquitous instrument in science and technology and has pervaded in numerous applications in research and medicine. Almost 300 years later in the 1980s, a new field of research has emerged with the invention of the Scanning Electron Microscope which pushed the limits of the optical microscope and opened the field of Nanotechnology; to which is one of the frontiers of research we have today.
We would like to commemorate microscopy by sharing online lectures on Nanotechnology as the Department of Physics does house one instrument in one of its laboratories in the STRC building to which is an integral part of the Physics curriculum, especially for student specializing in Materials Science.
