Title: Reflective Questioning as a Pedagogical Strategy for Enhancing Student Engagement and Critical Thinking in the Life and Works of Rizal Course
Author:
Dr. John Cliford M. Alvero
Format: Journal Article
Journal: The International Review of Multidisciplinary Research
Publication Date: March 2026
DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18869553
Publication Type: Peer-reviewed academic journal article

Scholarly Contribution and Thematic Focus:
Grounded in constructivist and reflective learning theories, this descriptive quantitative study examines the effectiveness of structured reflective questioning in The Life and Works of Rizal, a mandated general education course under Republic Act No. 1425. Involving 130 undergraduate students, the research explores how reflective questioning enhances student engagement across cognitive, behavioral, and affective domains while fostering higher-order thinking skills. Findings reveal consistently high levels of student agreement, indicating that structured prompts significantly improve content comprehension, analytical reasoning, and learnersโ€™ ability to connect Rizalโ€™s works and socio-political contexts to contemporary civic responsibility. Clarity of prompts, contextual relevance, and guided discussion emerged as key determinants of effectiveness. However, slightly lower ratings in emotional motivation and active participation suggest the need to integrate complementary dialogic and interactive strategies. Overall, the study highlights reflective questioning as a transformative pedagogical approach in humanities education, promoting critical inquiry, meaningful engagement, and deeper, socially relevant learning outcomes.

Title: Family Solidarity and Household Harmony Among Filipino Parents: Basis for a Family-Based Intervention Program

Authors:
Dr. John Cliford M. Alvero
Prof. Ansherina N. Natalio-Counia
Prof. Lovelyn E. Narvaja
Mr. Chris Davidson R. Lualhati

Format: Journal Article
Journal: Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives
Publication Date: March 2026
DOI: https://doi.org/10.69569/jip.2026.032
Publication Type: Peer-reviewed academic journal article

Scholarly Contribution and Thematic Focus:
This descriptiveโ€“correlational study examines the strength of Filipino families through the lens of family solidarity and household harmony in a barangay in Laguna, Philippines, grounded in the six dimensions of family solidarity (functional, affectual, associational, consensual, normative, and structural) to inform a culturally responsive, family-based intervention program. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), the findings reveal high levels of family solidarity and household harmony, no significant differences across demographic profiles, and a moderate, positive, and significant relationship between the two constructs. Overall, the study frames Filipino families as resilient systems and highlights the value of strength-based, community-informed interventions that promote communication, restorative practices, and intentional family routines to sustain harmony, well-being, and social stability.

Dr. John Cliford M. Alvero
Dr. Kyle Aris Dayvid D. Roรฑo
Prof. Eloisa J. Pramis
Prof. Angelique D. Perez

Publisher: Beyond Books Publication
Publication Year: 2026

Overview and Scholarly Contribution:
This newly published book examines how higher education institutions can serve as transformative agents in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through integrated frameworks of education, research, and community engagement. Anchored in the institutional philosophy of Virtus, Patria, and Scientia, the book presents the experience of San Pablo Colleges (SPC) in aligning its academic programs, research agenda, graduate attributes, and extension initiatives with global sustainability priorities. Central to the discussion is the NEXUStainability Framework, which maps the intersection of SPCโ€™s core institutional elementsโ€”its Precepts, the SPCian Intended Graduate Attributes (SIGA), and the QUESTS Institutional Research Agendaโ€”into a holistic model for sustainability-driven higher education.

Through conceptual discussions and case studies, the book highlights how ethical leadership, social responsibility, and knowledge creation contribute to building resilient communities and future-ready graduates. By documenting institutional practices and scholarly insights, the publication contributes to ongoing conversations on sustainability-oriented higher education, outcomes-based education, and institutional transformation, offering a research-informed model for educators, administrators, and institutions seeking to embed sustainability into teaching, research, and community engagement.
