Happy Pi Day from MATH_Inic Philippines!!
Today we honor the marvelous constant π—the timeless ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Though π is irrational (its digits stretch on infinitely without repeating), we often rely on the friendly approximation of 3.14.
Since 1988, March 14 (3/14) has been celebrated as Pi Day, a yearly dated to revel in circles, math, and yes—pie. In 2019, UNESCO’s 40th General Conference elevated Pi Day to the International Day of Mathematics, giving it global recognition.
Across schools, Pi Day is a joyful blend of math, creativity, and community:
• Math Festivals and contests
• Pie-eating contests and circular snack parties
• Pi digit recitation challenges (who can go the furthest?)
• Pi-themed art and poetry projects
• Math games and puzzles focused on circles and geometry
• Costume parades featuring digits, formulas, or famous mathematicians
It’s a day where math becomes a celebration—fun, festive, and full of flavor!
Pi Day also doubles as a Doomsday—not in the apocalyptic sense, but as part of a neat calendar trick. The Doomsday rule was derived from an algorithm developed by Joseph Conway in 1973 which helps us remember which dates always fall on the same weekday each year.
In 2026, Pi Day lands on a Saturday, so let’s map out the Saturdays across the year:
Even-numbered months bring these “super Saturdays”:
• April 4 (4/4)
• June 6 (6/6)
• August 8 (8/8)
• October 10 (10/10)
• December 12 (12/12)
From these anchor dates, just add or subtract multiples of 7 to find every Saturday in that month. For example, October’s Saturdays are the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st. And since December 26 is a Saturday, Christmas Day will be on a Friday—an easy way to plan your holiday schedule!
Odd-numbered months join the fun too:
• May 9 (5/9)
• July 11 (7/11)
• September 5 (9/5)
• November 7 (11/7)
Here’s a memory trick: picture a friend working at 7–11 from 9 AM to 5 PM—that’s your odd-month Saturday cue.
