Just as many Filipinos were starting to recover from the twin typhoons Nando and Opong, another calamity struckโ€”this time from beneath the ground. A series of powerful earthquakes reminded the nation of its fragile geography.

According to SciTech Daily, earthquakes are sudden ground movements caused by the release of energy stored in Earthโ€™s crust, typically along faults where tectonic plates meet. The Philippines is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a long horseshoe-shaped area that is seismically an active belt of earthquake epicenters, volcanoes, and tectonic plate boundaries that fringes the Pacific Basin. This caused for the country to be naturally prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, as the Pacific Ring of Fire has always been active.

Within a span of 15 days, several earthquakes were recorded in different parts of the Philippines starting at Bogo City, Cebu with a magnitude of 6.9 on September 30, followed by Pugo, La Union with a magnitude of 4.8 on October 9, then a doublet earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 located in Davao Oriental the following day, and three earthquakes in three locations at Isabela with 4.2 magnitude, Ambles with 5.0 magnitude, and Surigao del Sur with a 6.0 magnitude. Additionally, Bogo was once again shaken by the earthquake when its magnitude reached 5.8 on October 13.

Due to the strike off the coast of Bogo, which reached a magnitude of 6.9, numerous aftershocks were recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), including a 5.1 magnitude aftershock that reached more than 11,800. The Cebu earthquake was caused by tectonic activity and was identified as originating from the Bogo Bay fault line. The cause of the La Union earthquake was due to the Philippine Fault Zone and the Manila Trench, which are prone to earthquakes and result in an active fault where large earthquakes originate. While as for Davao, the Philippine Sea Plate was pushing against and sliding beneath the Philippine Trench under the Philippine archipelago. In short, the movement of the plate is called subduction.

As the news spread like wildfire from Visayas and Mindanao, Luzon was expected to be next. However, no one knew when the "next" earthquake would hit. Just in case, Laguna's Governor, Sol Aragones, declared that face-to-face classes starting on October 14-31 will be suspended as a preparedness measure for a potential earthquake to hit. As a result, this brings traumatic flashbacks to many Josephians because it gives the eerie feeling of the announcement of no classes during the pandemic.

Sir Leeuven Lescano, advisor of Grade 10 Zinnia, expressed his concern, saying that he felt sad because he had just recently returned from training and competitions from PRISEA. And it also brings him back to the situation way back 5 years ago, when it was also canceled due to the earthquake and the eruption of Taal Volcano, then all of a sudden, he couldn't meet his students in person anymore because the pandemic struck. He continued saying to be alert and cautious about the events happening around and having faith that the time of the pandemic, when we were just at home with many restrictions, will not come back.

Grade 12 Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) Peace Officer, Ynah Bagayana, stated, โ€œI'm scared because this isn't the first time this has happened, and going back to online classes is stressing me out. I struggle to focus in online classes, and I'm worried about how everything is going in the world. My grades are also a concern, and I'm sad that I won't be able to see my friends for a while. It's a lot of mixed emotions, but all I can do is follow the rules and hope for the best.โ€

Explained by Hannah Mae Laot, another Grade 12 student. "I was disappointed to hear about the pause in face-to-face classes. I miss seeing my classmates every day, and online classes feel like quarantine all over again. The classroom vibe is just better for studying and understanding lessons. But I get why we need to do this. Sol Aragones is right; it's about our safety and the community's. It's tough, but better safe than sorry, especially with all the unexpected disasters happening, like earthquakes. We only have one life, so we need to be careful."

During Science Class, Josephians were taught the procedures of what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. Ms. Chrislene Escriba emphasized the importance of both preparedness and faith during unpredictable times.
Ms. Chrislene also explained the things we should do before, during, and after an earthquake.

The air was vibrant with energy as Students from St. Joseph School disembarked their buses after along drive to Subic Bay. Their field trip included Ocean Adventure, Zoobic Safari, and Puregold Duty Free. It was a day that was designed to mix entertainment with hands-on learning about nature, wildlife, and the environment, Oct. 7.

Ocean Adventure greeted everybody with a lively atmosphere. The โ€œBalancing Actโ€ show put everyone in the right mood, combining the fantastic acrobatics of Season 5 Philippines Got Talent Grand Finalistsโ€”Dino Splendid Acrobats while teaching recycling and caring for the environment.

After the breath taking acts, the students roamed into โ€œWild World,โ€ where bamboo smoke's peculiar aroma filled the air as an instructor demonstrated how to prepare rice using the traditional method with just bamboo. Students moved in close to have a look at the Palawan Binturong and were amazed by the Philippine eagle-owl and Rufous hornbill, creatures that appeared to be narrating their own silent stories.

The excitement continued at the โ€œDolphin and Friendsโ€ where 2 dolphins named Enzo and Nala performed stunts with their trainers. Josephians, then proceed to another attraction, the โ€œSea Lion Marine Patrol" which also showcased behavior and stunts by Sea Lions, while reminding the audience about the ocean's vulnerability caused by pollution.

The pupils left the landscape of waves behind and entered the realm of the forest with their arrival at Zoobic Safari. โ€œClose Encounterโ€ introduced them directly to the powerful tigers and lions, their amber eyes shining from behind strong glasses of the enclosure. Thrill ran through everyone during the โ€œTiger Safari Ride,โ€ when the safari truck shot through the tiger enclosure being only a few feet away from these beautiful creatures in their habitat.

"For me, the highlight of our field trip was the time that we rode in a safari vehicle inside the tiger enclosure where we got to experience feeding the tigers,โ€ said Jilliana Lacap, a Grade 9 student.

The excitement did not stop and went higher again at โ€œCroco Loco.โ€ Under the steel walkway, there were more than two hundred crocodiles, their fierce jaws were trying to grab the chicken bait hanging for them. The atmosphere was heavy with excitement and dread at the same time as the students leaned over to look at it, their hearts pounding. However, the feeling of the place โ€œBird Walkโ€ was quite different; the moment was the colorful sky turning pale no more because of the bright birds. Loaded with parrots and different kinds of tropical birds, the aviary that before was peaceful became a memory to remember as they were flying from one hand or shoulder to another.

As the sun was setting, Josephians made their last stop at Puregold Duty Free Subic. With bags full of snacks and souvenirs, they looked back on a day filled with learning, bonding, and encounters that taught the students that animals are not only things to look at but are living creatures that need care.

In fact, this trip awakened people to protect animals from danger. โ€We need to learn about cleaning up pollution to protect animals and their habitats from harm and keep the environment healthy,โ€ stated Sir Crispin Faylon, teacher at St. Joseph School.

Journeys like this make us conscious of our shared responsibility in looking after their habitats, treating the environment with kindness, and making decisions that will bring about people's and wildlife's progress. Certainly, it was not only a day that could be described as fun but also a lesson that will stay with them long after the bus ride home.

A choir of chatters and laughter greets the air while students gather in front of the entrance. Lines of pupils occupy both sides while a few are scattered around the area, some leaning against the white walls, others fidgeting with the grainy surface of their tickets. Their gazes stray in different directions, eyes filled with curiosity and excitement. Josephinians, along with learners from neighboring private schools, come together to witness the movie of this yearโ€™s annual film showing!

What was to be a rainy September 23 turned into an even more meaningful morning on October 6, 2025, when St. Joseph school joined other private institutions such as Crest Christian School, South Lakes Integrated School, Scuola Dei Bambini di Sta. Teresita Montessori Inc, and Maranatha Christian Academy for a special screening of 'Mga Munting Tala' in Cinema 4 at SM San Pablo.

The show had been postponed due to Typhoon Nando (international name Ragasa), but the delay only strengthened the anticipation among the Josephian community. When the big day finally arrived, the energy was amazing, students buzzing with excitement, teachers guiding them inside, and the faint scent of popcorn mixing with the thrill of shared experience.

'Mga Munting Tala' weaves a heartwarming tale of hope, dreams, and resilience that lives in the heart of five kids in the midst of poverty, despair, and hopelessness. The story begins with the familiar Filipino streets scenery, and follows a little girl named Hana who excels in academics yet spends most of her time teaching kids from her barangay, stemming from her passion to become a teacher, accompanied by her friends Noah, who dreams of serving the church, Sarah who seeks to becoming a singer, Mary who wants to see her and her brothers' parents again, and her little brother, David, who desires being with Hana and helping his famiy.

The five fight for their goals despite their unfortunate environment, opposition from peers, and bullying. Overcoming lots of ups and downs together, they share deep and loving bond for one another as a result of their undying light and never-ending support. After lots of perserverance, dilligence, and kindness, they resolved issues, finished their battles, and took a big leap towards their dreams.

For Josephians, 'Mga Munting Tala' was more than just a movie, it was a mirror reflecting the values the institution upholds. The storyโ€™s emphasis on education, perserverance, and dedication resonated deeply with them.

โ€œThe film โ€˜'Mga Munting Talaโ€™ inspired students to value education and perseverance despite lifeโ€™s challenges. It also taught the importance of compassion, hope, and believing in oneโ€™s dreams,โ€ stated Sir Crispin Faylon, advisor of Grade 8 Daffodil and a respected teacher at SJS.

โ€œFor me, the movie 'Mga Munting Tala' shows that even if something looks small or simple, it can spark a big dream in someoneโ€™s heart. It teaches students that if you dream about something, you must also do something, through hope, kindness, and perseverance, to make it real,โ€ shared Miss Maria Hannah Manalo, advisor of Grade 7 Fern and another esteemed teacher at St. Joseph School.

โ€œI felt very touched and my heart softened when I watched the movie. Witnessing the impact of the movie, I got encouraged to do well too, not only inside but outside my house,โ€ expressed Louise Mhertle Dychanco, a hardworking 8th grader from SJS.

The evening in Cinema 4 became a celebration of community and shared inspiration. The laughter that once filled the hallways before the screening and the 'yieeee!!' during the subtly romatic scenes were replaced with quiet reflection as the lights dimmed and the five children's story unfolded. When the credits rolled, applause echoed, a collective appreciation for a story that reminded everyone of the power of small beginnings and steadfast hope.

Even after leaving the theater, Josephian carried home more than just memories. In the end, Mga Munting Tala did more than entertain, it rekindled the Josephian spirit. It showed that no dream is too distant, no hardship too heavy, when oneโ€™s heart is guided by faith and compassion.

Like the filmโ€™s tiny stars, each Josephian holds a light, humble yet radiant enough to brighten the world around them. And as the light of the screen faded on that memorable morning, one truth remained clear: in every small act of kindness and perseverance, tiny tales become tremendous triumphs.

In a thrilling finale of the PRISEALYMPICS Basketball Championship, SouthLakes Integrated School (SLIS) proved their strength and teamwork, defeating St. Joseph School (SJS) with a decisive 98โ€“75 victory to claim this yearโ€™s championship crown at Southlakes Intergraded school on October 4.

The game started with SJS starting off strong. Avila opened the board with a strong three-pointer, and SJS exhibited good ball movement and team play. The momentum soon turned around, though, as SLIS intensified the level of play with tight defense, aggressive steals, and constant rebounding. The first quarter ended with a score of 25โ€“16 in favor of SLIS.

SJS tried to stage a comeback in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 31โ€“28, but SLIS responded swiftly. Their strong offensive rhythm helped them regain control, widening the score gap to 55โ€“42 by halftime.

The third quarter ignited the crowd as both teams traded points in a fast paced exchange. Despite SJSโ€™s determination, SLIS maintained their lead, closing the quarter at 78โ€“57.

In the last quarter, SLIS kept their rhythm strong, combining sharp offense and solid teamwork to finish the game with a commanding 98โ€“75 triumph.

Despite the loss, SJS displayed remarkable effort and sportsmanship on the court. After seven years since their last championship in 2018, they proudly secured the 1st Runner Up title.

SJS standouts Ching (5th Mythical) and Velasco (4th Mythical) were both named to the Mythical Five, recognizing their exceptional performances throughout the tournament.

After the game, Coach Tala of SLIS shared a message, โ€œItโ€™s truly impressive because they gave their absolute best, they played all out, and beyond that, they played with their whole hearts.โ€

Coach Lescano of SJS also has something to say for his team, โ€œMy team must improve the defense and of course, fatigue was also a factor to consider since we played every day for an entire week. The games were non stop, so conditioning was really important."

Meanwhile, 2025 PRISEALYMPICS President Dr. Albina shared her vision for the leagueโ€™s continued growth, โ€œIm looking forward to have more or better facilities that our children would all enjoy to develop teamwork and collaboration among out students and faculty and the children will be able to envibe in theirselves the true meaning of respect, playing with love and joy in their hearts and ofcourse with discipline and respect to each and every oneโ€

The championship showcased not just talent but also teamwork. Both teams played with heart and determination. This years PRISEALYMPICS highlighted the true essence of sportsmanship among the athletes.

Bulwagan ng San Jose bursts with laughter and applause as students gathered to celebrate Teachersโ€™ Day, with a short event organized by the Supreme Student Leadersโ€™ Government, Oct. 2.

The celebration didnโ€™t end there, as the next day, the SJS admin treated the faculty staff to Sumo Niku as a gesture of gratitude, Oct. 3.

During the program, teachers reflected on their journeys and the meaning of their profession.

โ€œThe most beautiful part of teaching at St. Joseph is witnessing the growth and good values of my students,โ€ stated Sir Erick Palabasan.

For Ms. Rianne Gigante, who recently returned after a two-year break, teaching is a journey shaped by experience, โ€œAll the challenges that Iโ€™ve faced, molded me into becoming the teacher I am right now.โ€

The program started by giving certificates to teachers from both high school and elementary departments. It then went on, with the spell out, chair relay, and family feud.

Those games made the teachers from both departments compete in a friendly way.

Winning the spell out game was the elementary department, receiving price packages.

Meanwhile, the second game, the chair relay, was won by the high school department, receiving price bags.

At last, the third game, family feud, was won by the high school department. Concluding the event with high schoolโ€™s victory.

After the event, classrooms across the school also came alive with simple but heartfelt surprises prepared by students to surprise their teachers.

Beyond the games and surprises, the day fostered a stronger bond between students and their teachers. The program reminded everyone that while teachersโ€™ sacrifices are often quiet, they are invaluable to society.

On normal days, the class is loud, chaotic, and full of distractions ๐Ÿคฏ Some students banter during subject time, some even go outside to the bulwagan just to watch players practice. Who knows? They might have said that they need to use the restroom. Next thing you know, lots of minutes have passed and their mouths look suspiciously stuffed! Buuuuuut on Teachersโ€™ Day, everyone suddenly turns sweet, behaved, and full of good vibes! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ’ Even if Josephians can be a handful, deep down we truly admire and appreciate our teachers! Happy Teachersโ€™ Day to all our patient mentors, mga Sir and Ma'am/Miss of St. Joseph School! Thank you for your care, guidance, and endless dedication! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’šโœจ

By Eugrei Gil Nico Castro

Two young chess players from St. Joseph School made their mark in the recently concluded PRISEA Chess Tournament on September 30.

In the Chess Board B (Girls) category, Shaireen Soriano displayed remarkable skill and composure, finishing with a bronze medal after a series of challenging matches.

On the other hand, Brent Schuester Flores also showcased his strategic skill in the Chess Board B (Boys) category, also winning a bronze medal.

Their coach, Sir Carlito Lalusin, shared, โ€œIโ€™m their coach but in our team Iโ€™m not the best player, our training for this event was a collaborative effort therefore we all learn from one another.โ€

Both Soriano and Flores showed sharp decision making on the board, proving that their hard work paid off. Their success brings pride to St. Joseph School and sets the stage for even bigger achievements ahead.
