As St. John's Tide draws to a close, here is a short review of the highlights of this festival celebrated in school.

Celebrating St. John’s with water games and fire jumping are always great fun. Beneath this fun is a deeper meaning that gives the festival a great importance: change your ways!

John always proclaimed that we should change our ways, that we should clear the path or prepare the path for the lord. This twofold message to humanity may be represented in the game played during this festival. Water, for example, has long been associated with St. John’s festival Water is used to purify, to cleanse, to refresh. When we prepare for a big event, we shower. In this manner we prepare the way for the event that is to come. This too is part of St. John’s message.

Fire on the other hand is something we normally do not associate with St. John. And yet St. John also called to repent, to change our ways. Repent in Greek is metanoia. It means more than changing ways; it means to change our thoughts. This is more difficult. How do I change my thoughts so prejudices, biases, likes and dislikes, are transformed into creative ideas and constructive deeds? Clearly this is more than what water can do. This needs a different catalyst to bring on the transformation. Fire can do this when used constructively and purposefully. Thus John also proclaimed that one greater than he, one who baptises with fire was to come.

At Manila Waldorf School (MWS), we celebrate St. John’s festival with water and fire. After all the water fun, the urge to cleanse oneself is there. To jump the fire, our misconceptions and fearful thoughts of fire are confronted. Each is an opportunity to meet the call of St. John, the voice who called from the desert.

Each year, Waldorf schools around the world honor a beautiful tradition known as the Flower Ceremony, a heartfelt rite of passage that warmly welcomes incoming Class 1 students and new members of our school community.

The ceremony typically takes place on the first day of school, symbolizing the beginning of a new journey in the lives of these young learners. In keeping with the Waldorf philosophy of reverence, rhythm, and relationship, the Flower Ceremony reflects our commitment to fostering a sense of belonging, community, and interconnection across all grades.

At the heart of the ceremony is a gesture of welcome and support from the graduating class to the youngest. Each Class 1 student, and any new student joining the school, is presented with a flower by their teacher who will carry them in their journey in the school.

Class 12 accompanies the younger ones through an archway or to the front of the assembly, where the flower is given with a smile, a few kind words, and sometimes a handshake. This moment gently marks the transition from early childhood into the grades, a tender threshold in the Waldorf journey.

Parents, teachers, and students gather together to witness this moving event. There may be songs, verses, or a short speech from the Class 1 teacher or principal to set the tone. The atmosphere is reverent yet joyful, a celebration of both continuity and new beginnings.

The Flower Ceremony is not only a rite of passage for Class 1 students, it is also an invitation for new students of all grades to step into a nurturing, vibrant community that values each individual and their unfolding path.

While simple in form, the ceremony is rich in meaning. The act of giving and receiving a flower speaks to the core values of a Waldorf education: respect, compassion, growth, and the beauty of human connection.

For the students, especially those just beginning their school life, the Flower Ceremony plants seeds of confidence and assurance. For the older students, it serves as a reminder of their growth and their role as leaders and role models within the school.

Whether you are a parent witnessing the ceremony for the first time or a student passing a flower to a new friend, the Waldorf Flower Ceremony is a timeless expression of the love, warmth, and intention that lies at the heart of Waldorf education.

You are warmly invited to join our Lazure Painting Bayanihan on June 12–13, 9:00am to 3:00pm as we bring new life and color to our classrooms in the spirit of shared purpose and community!

Lazure painting is more than just beautifying walls, it is a unique artistic practice deeply rooted in Waldorf education. Developed by artist Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education, lazure uses layers of translucent, light-filled color to create a living, breathing atmosphere in the learning environment. The soft, flowing forms and subtle hues support the soul life of the child, encouraging inner balance, creativity, and calm. Unlike flat or solid color walls, lazure-painted surfaces remain vibrant and responsive to changing light throughout the day, creating a harmonious rhythm in the classroom.

This painting method aligns with the Waldorf understanding that our environment deeply influences a child’s sense of well-being and learning. Classrooms with lazure offer not only aesthetic beauty but also a space that nourishes imagination and inner quiet. It reflects our intention to care for the whole child, head, heart, and hands. Participating in this painting bayanihan is also a chance to experience the joyful spirit of community that defines our school.
