On November 6, 2024, the Extension Team of President Ramon Magsaysay State University, San Marcelino Campus, composed of Dr. Ferdinand V. Tamoria, Dr. Luz N. Corpuz, Prof. Rhia May C. Abrajano, Ms. Carissa G. Barnachea, Mr. Henry Mejia, Mr. Ulysses Navarro, and Ms. Rosemarie B. San Juan, conducted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the Bureau of Jail Management Penology (BJMP) Olongapo District Jail Male Dorm in Barangay Baretto, Olongapo City.
The primary objective of the FGD was to identify the most pressing needs of the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) and to formulate a comprehensive extension program that would equip them with valuable skills and knowledge, particularly in agriculture and related fields. These skills would empower the PDLs to secure employment or establish their own businesses upon their release, thus contributing to their successful reintegration into society. Additionally, the program aimed to support the Bureau's Climate Change and Environmental Awareness initiatives within the jail facility.
The FGD was warmly welcomed by Jail Superintendent Jun Teddy G. Madria and Warden, along with SJO2 Jacqueline C. Alterado, Chief Welfare and Development, and her team. During the discussion, the PRMSU-SM extension team introduced themselves and presented their institution's commitment to community engagement. SJO2 Alterado, in turn, shared insights into the existing programs for PDLs, highlighting their successful HAPAG program garden. She emphasized the need for further agricultural expertise to enhance the program's impact.
To gain a deeper understanding of the PDLs' requirements, the PRMSU-SM team conducted a tour of the HAPAG garden, assessing its potential for improvement and identifying areas where training could be provided. Additionally, the team inspected the training hall to determine its suitability for future workshops and seminars.
