HOPE RISES THROUGH TEMPORARY CLASSROOMS
SAN PEDRO, San Luis, Agusan del Sur — Amid the continuing lack of government-funded permanent classroom buildings, San Pedro Integrated School has once again demonstrated the power of unity and bayanihan spirit through the successful construction of two Temporary Learning Space (TLS) buildings for its learners.
The latest initiative, known as the “Mahagsay Project: TLS for Grade 7 and 8,” was constructed in October 2025 to address the growing classroom shortage in the school. The project, amounting to ₱165,000, was realized through the combined efforts of the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU), Municipal LGU through the Special Education Fund (SEF), School Parents-Teachers Association (SPTA), school administration, and community stakeholders.
Under the leadership of School Principal Janet S. Mondejar, SPTA President Pastor Josepe A. Salimbot, and Barangay Captain Ronil L. Mansumangcay, the project became a symbol of cooperation and dedication toward improving the learning environment of students. The Barangay LGU allocated ₱50,000 for land filling, flooring elevation, and labor expenses, while the Municipal LGU, through its Special Education Fund (SEF), contributed ₱43,000 for construction materials and labor costs.
Meanwhile, the School Parents-Teachers Association allocated ₱58,000 from its fundraising activity during the Yuletide King and Queen 2025 celebration. Sangguniang Bayan Member Sonia Chua also extended assistance by sponsoring two truckloads of gravel worth ₱7,000 per truckload to help strengthen the classroom foundation.
Despite being temporary structures, the classrooms now serve as safe learning spaces for Grade 7 and Grade 8 learners who previously struggled with limited classroom availability.
This was not the first time San Pedro Integrated School relied on community-driven initiatives to address infrastructure challenges.
In April 2020, another Temporary Learning Space under the “Mahagsay Project” was initiated and later completed in November 2021 through the support of various stakeholders and community partners. The project, costing ₱130,000, became one of the school’s major responses to classroom insufficiency during the pandemic period.
The Casilayan Softwood Development Corporation (CSDC) donated wood materials worth ₱45,000 used in the construction of the classroom. The Barangay LGU also extended ₱35,000 in financial assistance under the leadership of the late Barangay Captain Rubencio Castro Salamorin, who later died in a shooting incident. The SPTA likewise contributed ₱50,000 sourced from the yearly voluntary contributions of both 4Ps and non-4Ps beneficiaries within the community.
The earlier project was led by former School Head Babylinda Doysabas, later succeeded by Head Teacher Jocelyn Batico, together with SGC President Pastor Josepe A. Salimbot, former SPTA President Raquel A. Manlicayan, and replacement Barangay Captain Delion M. Manlicayan.
To further improve the condition of the learning spaces, School Principal Janet S. Mondejar also allocated a budget from the school’s Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) for Calendar Year 2026 through the school’s Annual Implementation Plan for the additional enhancement of the TLS classrooms intended for Grade 9 and Grade 10 learners.
Teachers, parents, and local residents described the TLS projects as more than just temporary classrooms. For many learners, the structures symbolize hope, resilience, and the community’s unwavering commitment to education despite limited infrastructure support.
As student enrollment continues to grow, stakeholders remain hopeful that permanent classroom buildings and additional educational facilities will soon be prioritized to provide learners with safer and more conducive spaces for learning.
