โSevere thermal conditions and heavy smoke accumulation prompted an immediate evacuation outside a burning boarding house in San Jose, Antique. During the outbreak, BS Criminology student John Russel Macuja, a fellow Anthonian and a dedicated SACSR Officer, initiated a direct emergency response, setting aside personal safety to protect human life.

โUpon receiving confirmation that an elderly female occupant remained trapped inside an interior room, Macuja evaluated the situation and acted without hesitation before first responders arrived on the scene. Saturation of his clothing with water served as his only defense against the intense heat as he penetrated the dense, blinding smoke. Operating without personal protective equipment (PPE), he navigated the structure, located the trapped victim, and safely extricated her from the rising flames.

โFollowing containment operations by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Macuja stood outsideโexhausted, soaked, and covered in soot. When questioned by witnesses, he responded with profound humility, treating a life-saving intervention as a simple human duty. While the structure sustained severe physical damage, his decisive action ensured that a life was spared.
