Congratulations to all of the groups who presented their Capstone Project (Observation and Interview) on Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) Implementation in Five Participating Schools.
Read Our Findings:
Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) helps teachers and students create learning environment more inclusive and responsive for diversity because it helps us to create and implement appropriate, specialized, and tailored activities based on the different and special learning needs of students. It advocates for teaching strategies that respect children's developmental stages, individual needs, cultural backgrounds, and social contexts to foster holistic growth.
But the results of our observations and interviews about DAP implementation in the participating schools reflects the situation in most of Philippine Schools and Classrooms, here's what to know:
BACKGROUND
- DAP forms the foundation of early childhood education, emphasizing strategies aligned with children's developmental stages, individual needs, cultural contexts, and social environments to promote holistic growth across physical, cognitive, language, and socio-emotional domains.
- In the Philippines, DAP is formalized via DepEd Order No. 47, s. 2016, and the Matatag Curriculum, supporting play-based, learner-centered approaches in Kindergarten through Key Stage 1, amid challenges like large class sizes and resource limitations.
- Theoretical roots include Piaget's cognitive stages, Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems, informing observations of real-world practices beyond infants/toddlers into kindergarten.
PROBLEM
- Implementation gaps persist in Key Stage 1 public schools, with teachers often relying on traditional rote methods due to overcrowded classrooms (40-50 students), high-stakes assessments, administrative pressures, and limited resources, hindering equity for marginalized learners.
- Classroom constraints include insufficient space for experiential activities, safety hazards (e.g., sharp edges, slippery floors), and inadequate play-based materials/manipulatives, restricting hands-on, multi-sensory learning essential for DAP.
- Challenges encompass adapting DAP to diverse learner profiles, including shy students or those needing extra support, while balancing structure with flexibility in Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) contexts.
PROPOSED SOLUTIONS
- Demand more budget allocations for schools to build more classrooms and provide more resources to teachers in addressing classroom shortages and constraints in resources.
- Enhance teacher training on DAP through professional development focused on child assessment, reflective practice, and integrating local materials for play-based learning to address resource shortages and administrative burdens.
- Optimize classroom environments by improving physical setups (e.g., secure play mats, accessible learning centers), using real objects for sensory experiences, and grouping students to foster collaboration and social-emotional growth.
- Promote mixed-methods evidence like systematic observations and teacher interviews to identify enablers/barriers, informing policy under Republic Act 10157 and SDG 4 for equitable and inclusive education reforms.
