Did you ever wonder how they measure the distance between Earth and the Moon without actually traveling there?

Today, the distance between Earth and the Moon can be measured very precisely using lasers. Scientists bounce powerful laser pulses off special mirrors called retroreflectors, which were left on the lunar surface by Apollo astronauts. By measuring how long the light takes to travel to the Moon and back, they can determine the distance. But even in ancient times, Aristarchus of Samos attempted to measure the Moon's distance. Using observations of the Moon's phases and geometry, he estimated the Moon's distance to be about 60 times Earth's radiusโ€”remarkably close to the modern average distance of about 384,400 km.
