The world's first surgical robot was the "Arthrobot", developed by Dr. James McEwen Geof Auchinlek, and Dr. Brian Day.

It was designed to assist in orthopaedic procedures, selecting and passing specialist equipment, and assist with positioning patients' limbs, thus allowing the human surgeon to focus on the medical procedure.
