Author of acclaimed graphic novel Persepolis, filmmaker, and women's rights champion, Marjane Satrapi, has passed away aged 56. She took to the comic format for Persepolis to tell the story of her adolescence in Iran and Austria amidst the Islamic Revolution, allowing millions of readers a glimpse into the interior lives and struggles of contemporary Iranians. It was published in four French volumes, and has since been an international bestseller and translated into more than 20 languages, and was made into an animated film for which Satrapi became the first woman to be nominated in the Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.
