La Union National High School is situated in Barangay Catbangen, one of the largest barangays in the City of San Fernando. It is situated about 50 meters away from the city proper. It is bounded on the west by the China Sea; on the east, by Barangay II and Sevilla; on the south, by Barangay San Francisco; and, on the north, by Barangay IV and Ilocanos Sur. It has a total land area of 132.5 hectares and is composed of seven (7) “sitio/purok”. It is considered the Education Hub of the City because of the presence of five institutions that have the most number of student populations, which include two campuses of the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, La Union National High School, Catbangen Elementary School, Gifted Learning Center, and other pre-schools. Founded in 1903, La Union National High School is a prominent public secondary school in the province of La Union due to its rich historical heritage, high enrolment rate averaging 4,500 every school year and for offering the most number of special programs and curriculum innovations. The school prides itself of a history with Americans serving as administrators until 1923 when management was turned over to Filipino school principals. Since the start, it has become a leader school in the province of La Union producing graduates who have become distinguished leaders and good citizens not only of our country but also abroad
Composed of two hundred sixteen (216) teaching and non-teaching personnel in its main campus for SY 2014-2015, the school implements the K to 12 Program. It also offers special programs: Science, Technology and Engineering (STE) formerly ESEP, Special Program in the Arts (SPA), Special Program in Sports and, Special Education (SPED), the STE program of which has maintained a special allocation from the national coffer since it was implemented in SY 1994-1995. The school also manages the Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs): Easy and Affordable Secondary Education (EASE) to respond to students in need of intervention, and Open High School Program (OHSP) for qualified working students and those who opt for home studies for other valid reasons. It operates on two shifts, daytime and the Evening Classes to accommodate some working students. Further, it offers Remediation Sessions and Summer Classes as intervention programs designed to help failing students and OSYs in the province cope with requirements to complete the number of units for admission to the next grade level. Since it started its various programs to enrich the curriculum, different alumni groups, public and private institutions, government agencies, LGUs, NGOs, the business sector and other organizations have been vigorously tapped to assist the school meet its various needs. The Adopt-a-School Program concepts through the numerous extension services of stakeholders have been effectively used; hence, have earned the school a number of outstanding accomplishments in various disciplines and numerous endeavors. In view of the increasing challenges of unemployment and the demands of technological advancement and industry, the school’s preparation for the implementation of the Senior High School Program is an assurance that the school tries to address these challenges the best it could for students to earn a certificate of national competency and prepare them for employment. This will eventually give hope and open opportunities for them to ascertain their capabilities, develop their potential and master functional skills in order to ultimately prepare them for real life experiences.
