We would like to congratulate Gerard John Albert Saman, one of our skilled students, for winning 1st Runner-Up in the 33rd National Astronomy Week AstroLit: Essay-Writing Contest!
Here is his personal remark:
"A single word cannot describe this moment as someone with a neurological condition.
After days of going through several doors of humilityโintense preparation, trials and errors, constraining times, travel and food budget, and a little grasp of faithโI finally witnessed the fruits of my efforts.
It is actually my first time with the coach to participate in a nationwide contest, and against all odds, I finally bagged 'First Runner-Up' in an essay-writing contest against other teamed representatives from competing schools. I, along with my coach from the English Department, Ma'am Annaly P. Rosales, are the only representatives of the school for this contest. It is also a privilege to be even greeted in the opening remarks by Mr. W***y Benz, the President of the International Astronomical Union(IAU), about our valuable participation in this event organized by the Philippine Astronomical Society(PAS).
Participating in this contest comes with a lot of hardships during preparation. My special interest in Astronomy was reignited recently since my childhood. I was initially reluctant to partake in the first place, given the degree of the contest, the location of the venue in NCR, and the short schedule for registration. In fact, the organizers originally intended the event to be held at a different place, but was however impeded by a number of delays, until they ultimately confirmed the competition venue in the aforementioned place three days before the contest proper. The coach and I had written various letters of permission to participate to the Department Heads, the Principal's Office, and finally to the Division Office to receive an approval for our request, in which they all gave a green light for us to participate.
On the day of the contest proper, we woke up before 4:00 AM to start our journey from San Fernando to the venue itself. We took breakfast and reviewed for the last time before the contest starts. The contest's prompt, which is based on the 33rd NAW Theme inaugurated by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration(PAGASA), initially posed challenges to my mental capacity, given the allotted time to finish the essay. Moreover, as someone from the Autism Spectrum, I experienced hurdles that challenged my ability to competeโthe cold environment, the rattling of tables as students write at a quick pace, and slouchy chairs overstimulated my sensory experiences. However, these challenges do not obumbrate my commitment to provide a coherent message that provokes the readers about my stance at a given prompt. I remain steadfast on what I learned from my teacher in her subject of writing position papers, making sure that I applied all concepts embodied within the topic while also integrating the relevance of scientific discoveries in this particular field.
At the end of the contest, I never expected myself to have my name mentioned in the podiumโin fact, I believed that the rest have exceptional writing skills as far as I observed. As my name was mentioned, We were both overjoyed as we bagged a place in the podium. I thank Ma'am Angelica 'Jeks' Marie B. Reyes for her initial support; and Ma'am Annaly P. Rosales, for her priceless commitment, dedication, guidance, and effort to make this achievement possible through her devotion; I also thank to our Department Heads, the Principal, and the Division Office for their approval for our participationโwithout their 'Yes', every word that I have written on this post would be impossible. Above all things, I thank God for his Divine Providence through the intercession of S. John Henry Cardinal Newman, the patron of writers and essayists. Ad astra per aspera! โจ"
