The song Closing Time by Semisonic sounds like a simple “last call” bar song on the surface — people leaving, lights turning on, everyone going home.
But the “real meaning” is actually much deeper.
The songwriter, Dan Wilson, later revealed that the song was also about birth and moving into a new stage of life.
That’s why the lyrics talk about:
“every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end”
Leaving one place behind
starting something unknown
So while it sounds like the end of a night, it’s really about:
- endings
- growing up
- transitions
-moving on to the next chapter
Back then, akala natin simpleng “inuman” song lang siya… pampatugtog sa radyo, sa computer shop, sa school fair, o habang tambay after class. 😄
But years later, parang mas naiintindihan na natin yung totoong meaning niya.
“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”
After graduation, kanya-kanyang buhay na.
May naging successful abroad.
May naging teacher, engineer, parent, OFW, businessman.
And just like the song says:
Every ending really became a new beginning for all of us.
Batch 1998–2002…
we may have left the school grounds a long time ago,
but the memories never really closed. ❤️
