What do "am" and "pm" mean?

The 12-hour clock (12-hour system)

a.m.
(from the Latin, ante meridiem):
meaning before midday "before noon".

a.m. starts at 12 midnight up to 11:59 am (before 12 noon).

p.m.
(from the Latin, post meridiem):
meaning past midday "after noon".

p.m. starts at 12 noon up to 11:59 pm (before 12 midnight).

In and Inside

الكلمتان بشكل عام يستخدمان ويحملان نفس المعنى (في أو في داخل) في كثير من الحالات

We are in the house = We are inside the house

لكن للتفرقة بينهما يجب أن نعلم أن

كلمة inside
دائما تشير إلى أن الشيء يكون في مكان محاط أو مفلق تماماً، بمعنى أنه في حاوية، صندوق ، مركبة، مبنى به حوائط

- The books are inside the drawer
- The students stood inside the circle

كلمة in
تستخدم عند الحديث عن الموقع، أو الوقت، أو المشاركة في شيء ما، أو غير ذلك من المواقف التي لا تكون محاطة أو مغلقة بشكل تام

- I live in Philippines
- My birthday is in July
- He plays guitar in a band

Into

بمعنى (في أو إلى داخل) وتشير إلى الحركة أو التحول

- She jumped into the swimming pool
- We went into the house
- The caterpillar turned into a butterfly

لكن مع وضعها في جملة مع الأفعال التالية
put, throw, drop, and fall
تستطيع أن تستخدم في الجملة أيما شئت، سواء
into or in

- He put the card into/in his pocket
- I threw the paper cup into/in the trash
- She lost her balance and fell into/in the river

Between you and I” OR “Between you and me”?

العبارة الصحيحة هي
between you and me
وليست
between you and I
وهذا أمر يختلط فيه حتى المتحدثين الأصليين أحياناً
ويستخدم هذا التعبير عندما تريد أن يحتفظ شخص ما بسرية معلوماتك

أما في قواعد اللغة الإنجليزية فالسبب هو أن حرف الجر مثل
between
بين يجب أن يتبعه ضمير المفعول به
objective pronoun (such as me, him, her, and us)
بدلاً من ضمير الفاعل
subjective pronoun (such as I, he, she, and we)

هذا المثل فكرتُهُ عريقة في القدم. وقد تبلور في صيغته هذه عام 1670 للميلاد

وشبيهٌ به قول العرب في أمثالهم: من الشوكة تخرُجُ الوردة

وقول ابن الوردي في لاميته
إنما الورد من الشوك وما***ينبت النرجس إلا من بصل

وقول أبي الطيب المتنبي
تُريدين لُقيان المعالي رخيصةً***ولا بُد دُونَ الشهد من إبَر النحل

*There are some nouns in English that are the same in the singular and the plural.

Singular--Plural

fish - fish
sheep - sheep
deer - deer
moose - moose
aircraft - aircraft
shrimp - shrimp
offspring - offspring
series - series
species - species
grapefruit - grapefruit

- I can see a sheep in the field.
- I can see ten sheep in the field.

Sometimes you will hear the word "fishes" (especially in songs) though it is grammatically incorrect.

Some English Grammar Rules

In general the plural of a noun is formed by adding -S to the noun.
Ex.
pen - pens
dream - dreams
phone - phones

There are a number of nouns that do not follow these rule.

*If the noun ends in US, we change it to I. Words that end in US usually have a Latin root.

Singular--Plural

cactus - cacti
fungus - fungi
stimulus - stimuli
syllabus - syllabi

Some exceptions:
octopus - octopuses (because it is from Greek, not Latin),
walrus - walruses

ليس للتعلم سن يقف عندها

أصل هذا الكلام مَثَل روماني يقول بأن على المرء أن يواصل طلب العلم ما دام فيه عرق ينبض
أما في الإنجليزية فيرقى المَثَلُ إلى العام 1627 ميلادي
وكان المسرحي الإنجليزي توماس ميدلتون أول من قاله
وثمة رواية أخرى لهذا المثل، دارجة هي الأخرى، ومفداها

لا تقل أبداً إن زمان التعلم قد انقضى

ويقابله عند العرب قولهم: اطلبوا العلم من المهد إلى اللحد

وما أروع قول الإمام الشافعي، وهو ينظر من بعيد إلى هذا الموضوع

كلما أدبني الدهر***أراني ضَعفَ عقلي
وإذا ما ازددت علماً***زادني علما بجهلي

Never put off till tomorrow what can be done today.
لا تُؤجل إلى غد ما يُستطاع فعله اليوم

وردت فكرة هذا المثل، أول ما وردت، عند الشاعر الإنجليزي تشوسر
(Chaucer 1340-1400 CE)،
أما أول من قاله، بصيغته المألوفة اليوم، فهو السياسي والمؤلف البرطاني إيرل تشيسترفيلد الرابع
(Fourth Earl of Chesterfield 1749 CE).

ويقابله عند العرب قولهم: لا تُؤجل عمل اليوم إلى الغد
