On this day, Chinese Language Day is observed to honor Cangjie. Chinese Language Day, established by the United Nations, also celebrates multilingualism and cultural diversity.

They intend to teach people about the history of the Chinese language. In 1946, the United Nations designated Chinese as an official language. The General Assembly designated Chinese as a working language in 1973.

Did you know?

Cangjie (倉頡) is a legendary cultural hero in Chinese folklore who is credited with inventing the Chinese writing system. According to stories, Cangjie originally served as the official historian of the Yellow Emperor. To be effective at this job, he would need a way to record historical events.

Cangjie's four-eyed appearance makes him easily identifiable. His extra set of eyes allows him to see the natural world in ways that ordinary people do not. He can see patterns, shapes, and lines that others miss. Later stories about Cangjie claim that he uses his four eyes to tell the difference between the truth and lies.

Cangjie temples can be found throughout China in provinces such as Henan, Shaanxi, and Shandong. The Cangjiepian proto-dictionary, named after Cangjie, is one of the earliest examples of a Chinese dictionary, dating back to 220 BCE. His name is also on the "Cangjie input method," which is used to enter characters into computers today.

The MOST COMPLICATED Chinese character is the word "biáng" which has a very specific meaning, and that is traditional noodle dish in Shaanxi province. I have counted it, the photo below is the simplified way (yes, it has been simplified already) which has 42 strokes, while the old traditional way of writing has more strokes - 58 strokes.
