Beyond the Bullets: Remembering Ninoy Aquino Day

On this day, August 21, 2026, schools are closed, markets are suddenly quiet, and people commemorate with pride and honor. Looking back on the Philippinesโ€™ history, this day marks an event that reshaped the nationโ€™s beliefs, perspectives, and awakening urge to oppose injustice. Republic Act No. 9256 established Ninoy Aquino Day as a special non-working holiday, commemorating the heroism and legacy of the late Senator Benigno โ€œNinoyโ€ Aquino Jr., who lost his life while standing up for the country.

โ€ŽOne assassination changed the entire political trajectory of the Philippines. At the Manila International Airport, now called Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), a drastic part of our history unfoldedโ€”an event that continues to leave us questioning: Why did the life of such a determined leader have to end in a hail of bullets? Yet, from this tragedy came a greater awakening among Filipinos. The events that followed eventually led to the EDSA People Power Revolution, giving not only the Philippines but also the world a powerful example of unity, democracy, and collective action.

โ€ŽHis death gave us a bigger frame of what nationalism truly means. He became a testament that a country is worth fighting for, as long as integrity lies within oneโ€™s soul.

โ€ŽThe late Senator Aquino emphasized the importance of learning from history, reminding Filipinos that no single dictator lives forever. This lesson may also apply to how we perceive our own history, because this day is not merely a simple holiday. Rather, it is a day of honoring the legacy left behind by Ninoy Aquinoโ€”a legacy that may serve as a way of learning for future generations to fight for what is right and keep the spirit of nationalism alive.

SDO Sagay City turned over lapels to 242 teachers of Sagay National High School from the Department of Education, recognizing their role in shaping the future of our learners.

The activity was graced by the presence of SDS Dannie Clark M. Uguil, SP Member Benson Fernandez, Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva, and Congressman Alfredo D. Maraรฑon III, whose continued support reflects a shared commitment to strengthening and empowering our educators.

We thank our teachers for their passion, dedication, and commitment to quality education.

Sagay National High School celebrated the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the 3-Storey, 18-Classroom Buildingโ€”a project that will help create a better, more conducive learning environment for our students and teachers.

This important initiative is made possible through the partnership of the Local Government Unit of Sagay and the Okada Foundation, through the dedicated efforts of Congressman Alfredo D. Maraรฑon III. This project is a testament to what we can achieve when leaders, stakeholders, educators, and the community come together for the future of our children.

We were honored by the presence of Cong. Alfredo D. Maraรฑon III, Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva, SP Member Benson Fernandez, SDS Dannie Clark Uguil, SPTA President Zechri Gabor, CID Chief Alma Mirasol, SGOD Chief Araceli Craus and personnel, Engr. The Department of Education wishes to address the recirculating April 2023 PTV News report regarding the proposed merger of Araling Panlipunan and MAPEH into "SIKAP."

We clarify that this news item reflects outdated discussions from 2023 and does not represent current policy. Furthermore, under the revised K to 10 Curriculum, Makabansa is a distinct, foundational learning area for Key Stage 1 (Grades 1 to 3)โ€”it is NOT a combination or merger of Araling Panlipunan and MAPEH. Rather, it uses a holistic, transdisciplinary approach to foster self-awareness, cultural appreciation, and civic understanding in young learners. Starting in Grade 4, Araling Panlipunan and MAPEH (Music & Arts, PE & Health) continue to be taught as separate and distinct learning areas.

We urge the public to practice critical thinking, check context, and verify release dates before sharing content online.

We were honored to welcome ASec. Roger Masapol of the DepEd Central Office, ARD Anthony Liobet of DepEd NIR, SDS Dannie Clark Uguil, and ASDS Mark Anthony Tan during their visit to assess and validate our school's security protocols in support of a safe, secure, and motivating learning environment for all learners.

Among the security measures presented by the school were installation of CCTV cameras in strategic locations, Public Address System for effective communication, security screening at the school gate using a handheld metal detector, strict visitor entry and gate access protocols and strong partnership with the Sagay City PNP to ensure police visibility and traffic management.

The school also shared its ongoing procurement of a walkthrough metal detector as part of its continuing commitment to further enhance campus safety.

We thank our DepEd Officials for their visit and giving of insights to our school.
