CAPIZ State University Sigma Satellite College joined the National Womenโs Month Celebration and welcomed the highly esteemed Vice President for Administration and Finance of the University, Dr. Mary Ann Martelino, to deliver an inspirational message to the Sigma community.
Dr. Martelino is an outstanding โWoman of Authorityโ who has proven to many that being a woman is not a limitation to reaching greater heights.
In her message, she emphasized that Gender and Development is not merely a program, but a โcultureโ reflected in how we treat others every single day. She further stressed that gender is not limited to men and women, but also includes those in the rainbow community, the LGBTQIA+, aligning this with the theme of Womenโs Month, โWEโโWomen and Everyone.
She explained that when we choose to include diverse gender groups, it is not only about recognizing their existence, but also about opening spaces where they truly belong.
As she passionately discussed inclusivity, she shared a thought-provoking historical perspective on individuals known as ๐ผ๐๐๐ ๐ค๐ง ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐๐ โbiologically male individuals who lived in feminine roles. Despite this, they were not excluded. They were respected. They were trusted. Many of them even became Babaylans.
Through this, Dr. Martelino emphasized that our ancestors already understood that leadership is not defined by labels, but by the ability to serve, to care, and to unite people.
Even when she elaborated leaders from across generations, citing Gabriela Silang, Melchora Aquino (Tandang Sora), Miriam Defensor Santiago, and even Liza Soberano, she did not forget to speak to the students of CAPSU Sigma.
She addressed the common struggles and self-doubt experienced by students, especially during their lowest moments when they question their worth. She reassured them that even if they feel unseen, unrecognized, lacking confidence, or not at their best, they can still make a difference through the way they treat othersโthrough their words and interactions.
She emphasized that leadership is not about the title one holds, but the influence one carries.
Dr. Martelino also inspired the faculty and staff by acknowledging the challenges they face, without diminishing their experiences. She continued by affirming that,
