On May 16, 2024, the Pinamihagan Fisherfolk Association in President Roxas received training on innovative oyster and mussel culture methods. As part of the USAID INSPIRE – SAFE Project by SIKAT Inc., members learned the Tray Culture Method for oysters and the Longline Method for mussels.

Supported by Capiz State University (CAPSU) FFRDC and local government unit of Brgy. Pinamihagan, the training focused on sustainable practices to improve shellfish farming. The new methods aim to minimize environmental impact and enhance the livelihoods of local farmers.

Participants engaged in hands-on activities, constructing tray bags and floaters, with deployment of the new culture units planned by the end of the month. This initiative seeks to boost shellfish production and economic opportunities for the community.

Sikat, Inc. - Capiz together with its partner academe, Capiz State University recently conducted training for the construction of the Tray culture method for Oyster and Longline Method for Mussel to Binaobawan Fisherfolk Association, one of the key partners People's Organization of the Sustainably Accelerating and Fostering Fishery Market Engagement in Pilar Bay, Capiz – SAFE Project under the USAID- INSPIRE grant. Conducted last April 16, 2024, at Brgy. Binaobawan Covered Gym, the training included an overview presentation of the project, lecture discussion, and hands-on construction of the culture methods.

Dr. Stephanie S. Pimentel, Director of Fisheries and Food Research and Development (FFRDC) introduced the tray culture method for oysters and longline method for mussels, emphasizing in her discussion the optimum water quality of the culture sites as well as the importance of adoption of environmentally friendly culture methods.

In line with the project goal to mitigate threats across Pilar Bay, tray culture method for oysters uses a tray bag made of green screen wire floating on the surface level using a black plastic container as a buoy is designed to culture single-shelled oyster and minimize siltation. While, mussel longline technology can be an alternative to the stake method in culturing mussels which increases siltation resulting in poor water quality and affecting the overall environmental health of Pilar Bay.

After undergoing training that expanded their knowledge beyond traditional methods, members of the Binaobawan Fisherfolk Association are now equipped with alternative culture techniques. Trained members of the association will spearhead the construction and deployment of this method.
