Did you know that bananas are naturally radioactive? 🍌
This is because they contain potassium, and a small fraction of potassium is the radioactive isotope potassium-40. While the amount of radiation from a single banana is extremely tiny and harmless to humans, scientists actually use something called the “banana equivalent dose” as a fun way to explain radiation exposure. For example, eating one banana exposes you to about 0.1 microsieverts of radiation. To put it in perspective, you’d need to eat 10 million bananas at once for the radiation to be lethal, so bananas remain perfectly safe and healthy to eat.
