Sweden was once considered one of the world’s pioneers of the “digital classroom”. For years, screens progressively replaced textbooks, laptops became standard in schools, and digital learning was promoted as the future of education. But after decades of promoting a full-tech model in classrooms, the country is now stepping back.

Today, Sweden is bringing back textbooks, staffed school libraries and phone-free classrooms following growing concerns from researchers, teachers and policymakers about the long-term effects of a screens-first approach to education.

For researchers like Christina Löfving, the problem is not technology itself, but the lack of clear direction around how it is implemented. Without proper teacher training, stronger curriculum guidance and support grounded in classroom realities, digital learning risks becoming inconsistent and fragmented from one school to another.

Sweden’s experience raises a broader question for education systems worldwide: how can technology support learning without replacing the human foundations of education?

🛑 There is no such thing as a natural disaster.

Hazards – earthquakes, floods, cyclones – are natural. Disasters are not.

Disasters happen when hazards affect people and systems that are exposed and vulnerable. That combination is not fate –it is the outcome of development choices.

Disaster risk has three components:
🔹 Hazard – the severity and frequency of the event
🔹 Exposure – the people and assets in harm's way
🔹 Vulnerability – how susceptible they are to damage

Understanding those three elements changes how we think about loss. Disasters are indicators of development failures. Disaster risk is a measure of how sustainable our development actually is.
The risk drivers are well-documented: poverty and inequality, poorly planned urban growth, climate change, and environmental degradation. None of these are acts of nature.

🛡️There is also a fourth dimension that matters: resilience – the capacity of communities and systems to absorb, recover, and improve wellbeing after a disaster.

Where resilience has been built, countries and communities have significantly reduced disaster mortality. Where it has not, extensive risk losses continue to rise – particularly for the poorest and most at-risk communities.

We need to have a very uncomfortable, data-driven conversation about the future of the Filipino workforce.

Recent World Bank data reveals a staggering reality: 91% of 10-year-old Filipinos suffer from "learning poverty." This means they cannot read and comprehend an age-appropriate text. Furthermore, our national Human Capital Index (HCI) sits at just 0.52.

What does 0.52 mean in plain English? It means a child born in the Philippines today will only be 52% as productive in their lifetime as they could have been if they enjoyed complete, high-quality education and full health. We are leaving nearly half of our economic potential on the table.

Why is this an economic crisis?

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): Global companies invest in countries with highly skilled, adaptable workers. If our next generation lacks basic comprehension, those jobs will go to neighboring countries.

The Innovation Gap: You cannot transition to a high-income, AI-driven economy if the foundational workforce cannot process basic instructions.

The Financial Lesson: We cannot fix our economy without fixing the classroom. True financial advocacy means demanding better educational infrastructure. For parents, the most vital investment you will ever make isn't real estate or stocks—it is ensuring your children achieve functional literacy at an early age.

ARAULLO: AI CANNOT PURSUE THE TRUTH

Filipino broadcast journalist Atom Araullo called on student journalists to stay grounded in truth and responsibility as artificial intelligence continues to reshape media, during the awarding rites of the National Schools Press Conference 2026 held on April 13 in Ormoc City.

He stressed that although AI can produce written and visual content, it lacks the human capacity to deeply engage with communities and uphold accountability. | via Stephanie Fabella/UM, SunStar Davao Intern
