On July 16, 1957, John Glenn set a new speed record flying a Navy F8U-1P Crusader from coast to coast in 3 hours 23 minutes.

"Project Bullet" secured his reputation as one of the country’s top test pilots, and he was selected to become a NASA astronaut not long after.

7 years ago today, this photo of Pluto was taken by the New Horizons spacecraft, revealing that it was far more complex than scientists imagined. The prominent heart-shaped feature has 2 icy, geologically-distinct lobes.
