HAPI DepEd Alert: DepEd shifts to 3-grading period system starting SY 2026-2027

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially approved the transition to a three-term school calendar starting School Year (SY) 2026-2027. The three-term structure is mandated for public schools nationwide for SY 2026-2027, with private schools and state colleges encouraged to adopt it.

The primary goal is to maximize instructional time, to ensure students have enough 'time on task' to master the curriculum, regardless of the seasonal challenges we face in the country.

Under the new system, the academic year will be divided into three distinct phases. This allows for more in-depth discussion of subjects before a major assessment period to reduce the "cramming" culture associated with shorter quarters.

The primary driver for this reform is to address the issue of compressed learning periods due to the frequent disruption and class suspensions brought about by typhoon and other natural hazards and overlapping holiday celebrations that break the momentum of learning.

According to the Presidential Communications Office, the approved structure is expected to benefit learners by providing longer, uninterrupted instructional days, reducing lesson fragmentation, allowing structured recovery periods, and improving the overall pacing of instruction.

PCO also notes that for teachers, the shift would remove one full grading cycle, introduce dedicated consolidation periods, embed up to 32 hours of professional development, and provide scheduled wellness intervals to reduce recurring workload pressures.

The new structure has not undergone pilot testing, but consultations have been conducted with various educational institutions prior to its presentation.
