These are small encounters that made big impressions, compiled across several sessions with three different playgroups.

Not every moment in our nature playgroup is loud, wild, or action-packed, nor would we want that.

We linger. We saunter. We pause and look closer...

A tiny leg moves through the grass. Little wings catch the light.

We get curious. We start to pay attention. Suddenly, the almost-invisible becomes fascinating. This is the art of noticing.

Cycle 1 brought us a moment we won’t forget. In the middle of the forest, we discovered bones—small, fragile, and full of mystery.

“Is it a bird? A bat? A human?”

The children leaned in closer, noticing feathers and claws, building theories, and asking big questions:

“What happened?”
“Did the eagle get out of its cage and attack the bird?”
“Did a bat bite its wing last night?”
“Will it go to bird heaven?”

And then also rethinking their ideas:

“Wait a minute. Do bats eat birds?”
“Maybe we should put a CCTV in the forest.”
“Are there birds in heaven too?”

The children had more questions than answers. Ultimately, they chose care. They found a hole and estimated that it was the right size for a grave. They buried the bones and crafted a sign.

The 6-year-old wrote carefully in lowercase with punctuation, showing growing confidence and control. The 5-year-old used bold uppercase letters, still figuring out spacing and layout. The 4-year-old added a short string of letters, beginning to understand that print carries meaning. They each contributed in their own way according to their stage of development.

The children continued to visit the bird’s grave in the sessions that followed. On the last day, some of them decorated it with hand-painted “precious stones.” It was a quiet tribute that spoke volumes of their growing empathy, their sense of community, and the beautiful way children make sense of the unknown.
