The pre-finalists for the Research and Design categories, nominated by the eight departments and institutes of the College, will be evaluated by members of the College Executive Board. Five unranked finalists in each category will be announced on or before Monday, 29 June 2026. All unranked finalists are guaranteed to be among the winners; however, at this stage their ranks are not yet known.

The five unranked finalists in each category will be judged and ranked by an external panel of judges. Ranked winners of the UPC 2026 will be announced during the College of Engineering Rites on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.

UP ICE Structural Engineering Group (SEG) faculty led by Dr Eric Tingatinga with Asst. Profs. Liezl Tan, Julius Baniqued and Joshua Agar joined the UP Resilience Institute team to inspect damage brought about by the recent strong earthquake in Mindanao.

First year BS CE students are not allowed to enlist in the following course offerings this midyear 2026 (see poster).

First year students who are currently enlisted will have their enlistments removed. Slots will be given to second year students and older.

UP ICE will hold its CE 195 Pre-Deployment Orientation Seminar (PDOS) on 15 June 2026 (Mon) from 1-3 PM at the David M. Consunji Theater, UP Institute of Civil Engineering Main Building, UP Diliman.

ATTENDANCE IN THE PDOS IS REQUIRED. Students who do not attend the PDOS will not be deployed for internship this Midyear and will be dropped from the course immediately. There will be no make-up activity for the PDOS.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

Dr. Giancarlo Ventura of the UP ICE Geotechnical Engineering Group recently published his paper titled “𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲-𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻" in the International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics. The paper is co-authored with Prof. Ronaldo Borja, his PhD supervisor at Stanford University.

The study developed a coupled three-field formulation based on a phase-field approach to simulate how rocks can slowly weaken and crack when exposed to chemically reactive fluids. It shows that chemical dissolution can increase pore spaces in rocks, reducing their strength and stiffness even before visible cracking occurs.

This model can help improve predictions of crack growth in rocks under combined chemical exposure and mechanical loading, with important applications in subsurface engineering, geotechnical engineering, and energy-related infrastructure.
