For years, weโve held Post-Graduate degrees (MA, MBA, PhD) as the sole gatekeepers of academic authority. There is no denying the value of that deep, foundational research.
To truly prepare the next generation, we must elevate
๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ, validated by microcredentials and industry certifications, to the same level of prestige as traditional degrees, especially in higher education.

A degree validates learning potential, but applied expertise (and industry-standard certifications) validates demonstrated performance. Itโs the difference between knowing the history of a tool and actually being able to build with it.
In industries that move at the speed of light, applied expertise is "living knowledge." While a curriculum might take years to change, microcredentials ensure that the expert is currently proficient in the tools and methodologies of 2026.
The primary goal of education is professional readiness. Practitioners bring the "Corporate DNA" into the classroom, teaching students the exact competencies that recruiters are actively looking for right now.
Post-graduate degrees provide a wide lens, but applied expertise provides the "micro-specialization" needed for specific business problems, making it a highly valid and specialized form of authority.
We donโt need to downgrade the "Doctor" or "Master" titles.
When we allow those with deep, applied expertise to teach alongside the academics, we arenโt just giving students a diploma. We are giving them a career.
Should colleges be more open to hiring faculty based on Applied Expertise and Industry Certifications rather than just academic titles?
In 26 years of Learning and Development, Instructional Design, leading and managing teams in the corporate world, and training Showbiz talent, Iโve learned one truth: ๐ช๐ต๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ ๐ต๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฒ๐๐, ๐ถ๐'๐ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ธ๐ถ๐น๐น ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ธ๐.
As a fan, I watch the game. As a Martial Artist (Muay Thai and Capoeira) for over a decade, I understand the physical toll of performance under fire. But as a Communication Architect, I look for the "Signal Latency."
I look for that split-second hesitation in a double-commit, or the "mental hangover" after a service error. I am fascinated by how teams can have elite talent, yet still lose sync when the environment gets loud.
I hope to help teams explore:
Tools to "flush" errors before the next whistle blows.
Coordination during the "scramble" when the play breaks down.
Managing the psychology of "swag" to maintain momentum.
Balancing performance with brand-safe "Fan Service."

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak at the COO Academy Day of ING, which included L&D teams in the Philippines, Poland, the Netherlands, and its other locations.
I shared about how learning is an important cog in AI adoption and how we can move to a leaner, more agile instructional design stack to respond to this disruption. We also talked about our responsibility as leaders and L&D professionals to build on this knowledge as we lead teams through these times.
Thank you very much Niels Burghoorn, CKYCA, CLDP, and Ramon Alfonso A. Sarza, for having me share what little I know with your teams here and all over the world.

My certification students and friends know that, in addition to corporate training, I work in the Entertainment Industry, training top actors, singers, boy and girl groups, beauty queens (Miss Universe, Miss Earth, and Miss Supranational), and influencers with millions of followers in the Philippines, preparing them for anything communication-related. In the last 5 years, I have been working with the Sparkle GMA Artist Center, together with other artists from the Talent Management arms of other networks and production outfits.
From interviews, hosting gigs, promos, media conferences, public speaking opportunities, and even the delivery of lines for their acting projects, I have got these creatives up to speed with the very demanding needs of the industry...and the fans.
And if you know, training creatives is a whole different ball game from corporate training. This summer, the Talent Development team of the Sparkle GMA Artist Center is opening the opportunity for anyone who wishes to find their most confident voice through its Public Speaking class, which I will be teaching.
Find the details below and see how a more creative approach, in a TV network's Rehearsal Room, can get you to discover that brave voice within you.
See you then!
PS. Yes, I also teach child actors, and there is a class for your kids as well. :)
PPS. More artista pics are in my IG account.

I've always believed that Learning and Development is an accelerator of skills and opportunities especially with organization that may not have the resources to do so on their own accord.
This year I travelled all the way to the Zamboanga Del Sur Electric Cooperative 2 (ZAMSURECO2) in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay province.
3-days, 2 batches of Customer Experience Training for the employees of the head office and sub-offices in the province.
Under the auspices of NEA Deputy Administrator Omar M. Mayo and Zamsuresco2 AGM Engr. Ernie Jose O. Lao, I was able to offer insights, theories, models together with practical, actionable items to make their customers' experience out of this world.
The travel was all worth it, all to bring Learning and Development to the farthest areas and to those that need it, at minimal to no cost.
Here's to truly serving the ones that need it for nation-building

If you are an L&D leader or professional and are still asking the proverbial question โWhere do we start?โ when it comes to AI literacy for learners, hereโs a credible starting point hiding in plain sight.
In 2024, UNESCO released AI competency frameworks for students and teachers.
While these were initially designed for the academe, the intent is explicit:
These frameworks are meant to be adapted across education levels and into the workforce, particularly for organizations that are still early in their AI literacy journey.
Incorporating these frameworks into existing competencies for our learners and L&D teams gives us:
- A globally informed, neutral baseline
- A way to de-risk AI adoption without starting from scratch
- A shared language for ethical use, critical thinking, and human judgment in an AI-enabled workplace
NEXT QUESTION: How do we translate an academic framework into a workforce-ready competency model?
Step 1: Anchor (What already exists)
Start with your current core, functional, leadership, and digital competencies. This is your operating reality, not a blank canvas.
Step 2: Map (Where AI fits)
Overlay AI competencies onto your existing framework. Identify overlaps with problem-solving, ethics, decision-making, data literacy, and leadership judgment. Yes, this is competency mapping, and yes, itโs non-negotiable.
Step 3: Translate (Academe โ Workplace)
Convert academic learning outcomes into observable workplace behaviors:
- Evaluates AI outputs critically
- Applies human judgment in AI-assisted decisions
- Uses AI responsibly and ethically in daily work
Step 4: Find Important Gaps (Whatโs missing today)
Identify priority gaps: AI awareness, prompt literacy, data reasoning, bias detection, and human-in-the-loop thinking. These become your learning signals.
Step 5: Tier (Role-based, not hype-based)
Different depth for different roles:
- AI Users โ apply tools responsibly
- AI Decision-Makers โ validate, judge, escalate
- AI Designers โ build or configure solutions
- AI Leaders โ govern, enable, and model use
Step 6: Embed & Iterate (How it sticks)
Integrate AI competencies into existing programs instead of launching a one-off โAI course.โ Pilot fast. Iterate faster. We've all talked about this in class. Break learning into chunks. Embed in your current work ecosystems. Be Agile.
You donโt need a perfect AI curriculum on day one.
You need a structured, adaptable, human-centered starting point.
So if you are an L&D leader and is working on your organization's AI literacy program:
- Pull out your current competency framework this week
- Map where AI already fits and where it doesnโt
- Start with one role, one function, one pilot
AI literacy isnโt a content problem.
Itโs a capability design decision.
If youโre reworking your AI roadmap this year, it's now time to start moving.
