In authentic Montessori environments, every corner of the environment is prepared with intention—including the words that surround our children.

During the start of the schoolyear at Family Montessori, two simple yet well-prepared bulletin boards greet our children each day:

🌱 **"Ready to Grow This School Year."**
🤝 **"Individually Unique, Together Complete."**

To an adult, they may seem like ordinary decorations, put up to fill up a space.

To a child, however, they can mean much more.

Children absorb far more than we often realize. They notice familiar words, associate them with meaningful experiences, and gradually begin to recognize and understand them.

A print-rich environment does not only encourage reading—it helps children appreciate that written words carry meaning, purpose, and emotion.

More importantly, these words become gentle affirmations.

"Ready to Grow" reminds children that learning is a journey and that every day is another opportunity to discover something new.

"Individually Unique, Together Complete" quietly reinforces an important truth: each child is valued for who they are, and our community becomes stronger because of our differences.

In Montessori, we carefully prepare not only the materials and the classroom, but also the messages that fill the environment. The words children repeatedly see and hear slowly become part of their vocabulary, their understanding, and eventually, their way of thinking.

The written word is powerful. It can teach, encourage, inspire, and affirm.

Sometimes, the simplest phrases displayed on a wall become seeds that quietly grow in a child's heart long before they are able to read every letter on their own.

Because in a prepared environment, every detail has a purpose—and every word matters.

Based on research, the three top challenges of parenting young children are:
Tantrums
Sleeping problems
Eating challenges

We have already shared 2 out of 3 posts on the first topic.

Allow us to share how we do our part in helping your young child through our communal snacks.

From time to time, we prepare home cooked snacks which are not often served at home or allow them to taste a variety of snacks aside from the more common pre packed or commercial ones.

Last Friday. we served fried Plantains or SABA.

It was so delightful to see the children finish their first serving and come back for more.

Family Montessori prepares young children for life.

Eating is life. :)

Our nutrition program isn't all about JUST eating.

It is all about following procedure: washing your hands, getting your placement, lining up for food, waiting for your turn .... creating many opportunities to exercise grace and courtesy.

"Ang hirap naman, daming proseso. Kakain lang. Sa bahay, ibubuka mo lang bibig mo makakakain ka na."

Then again, where is the life giving skills there?

The Montessori mixed age environment allows older children on their third year the opportunity to lead, and to lead by serving.

It gives the older child so much pride to know that skills learned are applied and useful.

THE BEST TANTRUM STRATEGY is PREVENTION. Part 2 of 3

Managing tantrums is mostly PREVENTIVE rather than REACTIVE.

A person has left an ice cream on the kitchen counter. The child sees the ice cream, wants it and starts to demand.

But, there is a rule. It is almost dinner time. No ice cream or sweets before dinner time. It has happened before and it is expected to happen again. The answer will be "NO." But still the child will ask. And the answer will still be NO.

CHILDREN do best when they already know the expectations before emotions become overwhelming.

Tip #2: Set boundaries early and give gentle reminders.

When you notice frustration starting to build, calmly remind your child: "Remember to relax." "Tell me calmly what you need." "You remember the rules."

These reminders are much more effective before a full tantrum begins.

Another helpful strategy is to prepare children for difficult situations:
** Tell them what to expect before entering attending an event or entering a store.
"There will be ice cream in the party and we can eat it only after dinner." *or whatever situation applies

** Explain the rules ahead of time.

** Notice calm communication whenever you see it.
"I noticed that you were upset but you did not throw the ball at anyone."

Children who know what is expected are often better able to manage disappointment.

PREVENTION will not eliminate every tantrum - but it can gently reduce how often they happen especially with CONSISTENCY.

CONSISTENCY in executing the rule and CONSISTENCY among significant family members , especially extended family members.
