Today, we join the nation in celebrating the hard-won independence that has marked Philippine history. In honoring independence, we recognize that the struggle for freedom did not end with the declaration of independence. It continues to live on in the constitutional principle that sovereignty resides in the people and that all government authority emanates from them.

This principle serves as a reminder that public office is a public trust exercised in the name of the people. Government officials derive authority not from themselves, but from the sovereign Filipino people. As such, they remain accountable to the public for the exercise of their powers.

Its significance remains relevant in recent national issues, including the Senate impeachment proceedings, shifts in legislative alignments, and the implementation of public infrastructure projects including the flood control programs. It is likewise reflected in persistent scrutiny of public officials who have long been subject of legal warrants and processes. All of these underscore the people’s role in demanding accountability and transparency in public service and reaffirm the reality that every act remains answerable to the people.

As we commemorate this day of independence, let us remember that a truly independent nation is one where the government remains accountable to the people from whom its authority originates. As citizens, it is our duty to take part in shaping the nation’s future and safeguarding its sovereignty.

Mapagpalayang Araw ng Kalayaan!
