The text on the wall that welcomes students of the UP College of Law incites curiosity and intrigue among both old and new students. But what does it mean to really study law “In the Grand Manner”? To elucidate the meaning behind 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫, we will hear from 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐋𝐂 𝐑𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐁. 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐯𝐚 𝐀Φ𝐁 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟏𝐄.

Justice Villanueva is the 195th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Before his appointment this year as an Associate Justice, he served as the Court Administrator of the Supreme Court, the agency responsible for administrative oversight of the entire Judiciary. He has more than two decades of service in the Judiciary, including serving as an Executive Judge in the RTC of Las Piñas City and an Acting Presiding Judge in the Regional Trial Courts of Taguig and Manila. He also served as the Executive Vice President of the Philippine Judges Association and as Chair and Professorial Lecturer at the Philippine Judicial Academy.

Justice Villanueva is a graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman in both undergraduate and law degrees. He finished his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics in 1985 and his Bachelor of Laws in 1990.

ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCE: A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY

Defined under Republic Act No. 10353, enforced disappearance is the arrest, detention, or abduction of individuals by state agents or groups acting with official consent — followed by a refusal to acknowledge their whereabouts, placing them beyond legal protection.

Farmer activist Jonas Burgos suffered this kind of abduction in 2007 that pushed his brother, Director JL Burgos, to uncover the truths behind his enforced disappearance through the documentary film Alipato at Muog. The Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity proudly presents APB LAE Preparations 2025, a month-long program designed to equip aspiring law students for the highly competitive UP Law Aptitude Exam (LAE). Kicking off with an opening event featuring the Fraternity’s distinguished alumni, the program provides invaluable insights, a comprehensive diagnostic test, and a full LAE simulation to ensure participants are well-prepared and confident in pursuing a legal education.

The APB LAE Preparations 2025 will commence on February 9 with the Opening Program and Diagnostic LAE, available both onsite and online. This will be followed by LAE Review Sessions on February 15 and 22, conducted online for accessibility and flexibility. The program will culminate on March 1 with a Mock LAE and Mixer, allowing participants to simulate exam conditions and connect with fellow law school aspirants.
