As the first international conference of the Society for Early Transpacific Studies (SETS) at the University of the Philippines, Diliman draws to a close this afternoon, the host institution, the UPD Department of European Languages, would like to thank everyone involved in making this conference a resounding success!
We'll share more photos and complete credits soon, but here's a before and after of the SETS from when it was founded at Princeton University in 2024 and its first international conference at UP Diliman in 2026.

The international conference of the Society for Early Transpacific Studies on the Spanish Pacific, hosted by the local organizer, the UP Department of European Languages, kicked off yesterday at the Child Development Center of the UP College of Home Economics. More than a hundred senior scholars and early-career researchers from Asia, America and Europe are currently on campus to present their papers.
We’ll share more pictures of the inaugural ceremony in the coming days, but for now, here are the members of the organizing committee in their Filipiniana.

Dr. Marlon James Sales of the Spanish section gave an interview in last night’s episode of the TV program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, broadcast on GMA 7. The interview was for a feature story on Philippine national hero José Rizal. Dr. Sales was asked to translate and explain a medical note that Rizal himself wrote in Spanish.

It's less than a week to go until the opening of The Spanish Pacific: An Interdisciplinary Conference, organized by the Society for Early Transpacific Studies and hosted by the UPD Department of European Languages of the UP College of Arts and Letters.
We are delighted to have with us Prof. Ambeth R. Ocampo of the Ateneo de Manila University, who will give the inaugural lecture titled "Lost in Translation: Filipinas in the Spanish Pacific." This inaugural lecture is exclusive to paid conference participants and invited guests from institutional partners.
