"Southeast Asian Studies: Ideas, Audiences, Approaches, and Aspirations"

For members of the general public who wish to attend the conference as participants only and not presenters. Here are a few reminders and some additional information for our conference to be held on 13-14 November 2025 at the Institute of East Asian Studies, Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus, Thailand.

Pre-Registration and Registration Fee

1. The registration fee for registered non-presenters are as follows:
- Members of the general public who wish to attend the panels (must pre-register at https://tinyurl.com/SEASREPPreRegistration>on or before 15 October 2025): U.S. $30 (฿1,000), which may be paid at the conference site.

2. The registration fee covers conference meals (including the welcome dinner) and the SEAS-IA3 kit.

Accommodation

3. There are several hotels and on-campus lodging choices that we can recommend. You may contact them directly for your booking. Please find them via this link:

Meals and Clothing

4. Snacks and lunch will be provided on 13-14 November at the conference site.

5. A welcome dinner will be provided on 13 November 2025

6. If you have any dietary requirements, inform us as soon as possible.

7. The dress code for the conference is business casual.

8. November is also the start of the cold season in Thailand. A light jacket would be useful.

Conference

9. The conference will be held at the Institute of East Asian Studies, Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus, Thailand on 13-14 November 2025. The conference program will be sent later on.

10. Each panel room has a computer and LCD projector for your presentation. You may, of course, bring your own laptop and adaptors if you so choose.

11. Each panel presenter has 15 minutes for his/her presentation and each panel has 15-20 minutes for the open forum. For roundtable discussions, you will be given 1 hour and 30 minutes, including the open forum for the entire session.

12. For panel presenters, please submit your presentation slides to [email protected] on or before 30 October 2025.

13. For those that want to revise their abstracts, please submit your final abstract on or before 30 September 2025.

14. The conference site has free WiFi connection.

About Rangsit Campus

15. The Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University is located at 99 Moo 18 Phahonyothin Road, Khlong Nueng, Chilling Luang District, Pathum Thani 12120.

16. It is 22 km (about 20 minutes by car) from the Don Mueang International Airport. A taxi from this airport to the campus costs no more than ฿500.

17. For those arriving at Suvarnabhumi International Airport (56 km from TU Rangsit or about 60 minutes by car, depending on traffic), the price of the taxi is less than ฿1,000.

18. The Institute of East Asian Studies is building 12 on the map .

19. The Thai government requires everyone flying to Thailand to accomplish and submit a digital arrival form 3 days in advance of their arrival via . On this following link is a helpful guide .

Dennis B. Batangan, MD, MSc.
Leong Institute Global Area Studies Research Fellow

Dr Batangan is a public health specialist, esteemed faculty member of the Dr. Rosita G. Leong School of Social Sciences and Ateneo School of Government, research scientist at the Institute of Philippine Culture, and awardee of the 2025 Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST) Lourdes Campos Award for Public Health.

His host institutions for his research were the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP), Vietnam National University Hanoi - University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and the EPI Northern Region Communicable Disease Control Department, Thailand.

Charlie Samuya Veric, PhD
Leong Institute Lectures in Philippine Studies Fellow

Dr Veric is associate professor and the founding director of the Literary and Cultural Studies Program at the Ateneo de Manila University, Vice Chair of the Humanities Division of the National Research Council of the Philippines, and former fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study and the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study.

He delivered his lecture at Brown University hosted by the Brown University Southeast Asian Studies Initiative and the Brown University Filipino Alliance, USA.

Pagtataya sa Kalusugan: Benchmarking for a Philippine Foresight Study Methodology

Leong Institute Global Area Studies Research Fellow

As a methodological study, this RLIGAS Research Fellowship conducted benchmarking activities with foresight study methodologies in South Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand. The Philippines’ Ambisyon Natin 2040 and Pagtanaw 2050 were referenced as well in piloting an emerging foresight methodology using an electronic Delphi Survey platform. The 2022 National Health Demographic Survey (NDHS) major health issues were framed as Delphi survey questions with indicators in identifying possible health interventions and its realization through WHO’s health system building blocks. Thirteen (13) Delphi survey respondents using the eDelphi platform assessed the urgency of each major issue as an anticipated health need and evaluated the importance, awareness, and realization of identified possible health interventions. The research process and results of the pilot study will be presented in this public lecture.

The American Colonial Origins of Filipinization

Leong Institute Lectures in Philippine Studies Fellow

The lecture reconstructs how Filipinization as a colonial policy became the basis of postcolonial identity. Contrary to conventional wisdom, I argue that decolonization did not take place after colonization. Rather, Filipino decolonization evolved with US colonialism. The story of how Filipinization came to be is, in short, the yet untold story of the strange but successful American experiment with a new form of governmentality in the 20th century: Imperialism without imperialists. Looking at American colonial policies following the successful occupation of the Philippines in 1898, I will reconstruct the twin rise of US colonialism and Filipino decolonization, demonstrating how the former became the enabling context for the emergence of the latter. Using historiographical methods in American Studies and Philippine Studies, as well as archival documents and newspaper accounts, I will track the emergence of Filipinization and shed light on its development as a colonial policy and, later, as a political thought from 1898 to 1946 when the US granted independence to the Philippines. Contained in this evolution—wherein Filipinization, independence, and decolonization bled into each other—was the dual development of the colonial US into a neocolonial power, and of the colonized Philippines into a postcolonial nation.

The Ricardo Leong Institute for Global and Area Studies (or the Leong Institute) invites you to the very first Leong Institute Fellows' Forum on September 19, 2025 (Friday) from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Leong Hall Auditorium.

The Leong Institute Fellows’ Forum (LIFF) serves as the platform for knowledge sharing by the recipients of the Ricardo Leong Grants for Global Area Studies Research and the Ricardo Leong Grants for Lectures in Philippine Studies.

The Ricardo Leong Grants aim to support international mobility of Ateneo de Manila University faculty, develop geographical expertise outside the Philippines, and forge academic collaborations and international linkages between the University and partner universities or institutions abroad.
