On August 22, 1977: The nightly curfew imposed under Martial Law was lifted

In effect since September 1972, the strict curfew had restricted movement nationwide from midnight until 4:00 AM, with violators subject to arrest and detention. President Ferdinand Marcos announced the removal of the curfew as a sign of "returning to normalcy" and improved public order. While many welcomed the change, key restrictions remained in place โ€” including limits on civil liberties, press censorship, and the continued detention of political prisoners โ€” and Martial Law itself would not be formally ended until 1981.

On August 18, 1926: Larry Alcala was born in Daraga, Albay

Born Lauro Zarate Alcala, he would grow up to become the Dean of Filipino Cartoonists and later a National Artist for Visual Arts (conferred posthumously in 2018). Over a career spanning more than 50 years, he created over 500 characters, 20 comic strips, and 15,000 published pages โ€” including beloved classics like Kalabog en Bosyo, Mang Ambo, and his most iconic work, Slice of Life, which affectionately captured the humor and heart of everyday Filipino life. He also taught at the UP College of Fine Arts for 30 years, shaping generations of local artists .

On August 17, 1898: The remains of Dr. Jose Rizal were exhumed and taken to his family home in Binondo

After his ex*****on on December 30, 1896, Rizal was secretly buried in an unmarked grave at Paco Cemetery, guarded for 15 days by the Guardia Civil. His sister Narcisa found the site and marked it only with "RPJ" โ€” his initials in reverse โ€” to avoid detection.

Two years later, following Spain's defeat in Manila, his remains were finally exhumed. The bones were placed in an urn made by Teodoro Romualdo de Jesus and brought to his mother Teodora Alonsoโ€™s house on Calle Estraude, Binondo โ€” a homecoming that allowed his family to finally honor him openly. His remains would rest there until being laid beneath the Rizal Monument at Luneta on December 30, 1912 .
