Strengthening Science and Mathematics Instruction: DepEd NCR Launches Content and Pedagogy Training

IN PHOTOS: DepEd National Capital Region officially opened the Training on Content and Pedagogy: Utilization of Science and Mathematics Equipment yesterday, September 21, 2026, at the Makati Palace Hotel, Makati City. The five-day training aims to strengthen participants’ pedagogical content knowledge and practical skills for the appropriate and purposeful utilization of Science and Mathematics equipment, ultimately contributing to improved instruction and learner achievement.

Day 1 established two essential foundations for the training: responsible stewardship of learning resources and sound pedagogy in their classroom utilization.

Mr. Ernesto Magdaong Jr., Administrative Officer V of the Asset Management Section of DepEd NCR Regional Office, discussed “Stewardship and Asset Management of Science and Mathematics Equipment: Accountability, Breakage, and Condemnation Procedures.” His session guided participants through their responsibilities as stewards of government resources, including accountability for equipment, appropriate procedures in cases of breakage, and the processes involved in the condemnation of unserviceable property. The discussion emphasized that maximizing the instructional value of equipment begins with ensuring that these resources are properly managed, cared for, and sustained.

The day then moved from managing equipment to designing learning around it. In plenary and breakout discussions, the Science and Mathematics participants explored pedagogical approaches that can help ensure that equipment use goes beyond demonstration and becomes a means for developing higher-order thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving.

For Mathematics, Mr. Lambert Quesada facilitated the discussion on Polya’s Method of Investigation, emphasizing systematic problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. For Science, Mr. Don King O. Evangelista discussed the TPACK Framework as a guide for bringing together content, pedagogy, and appropriate technologies and learning resources in lesson design. The session also highlighted the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) framework as a practical approach for helping learners construct explanations from evidence and strengthening scientific literacy.

The opening day was further enriched by an inspirational message from Assistant Secretary Jocelyn DR Andaya, Regional Director of DepEd NCR and concurrent Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Operations. She shared the continuing direction of DepEd NCR toward strengthening Science and Mathematics education in the region and sustaining the gains already achieved until the system reaches a “tipping point”, where consistent efforts and improvements can lead to broader and lasting transformation.

Day 1 therefore carried a clear message: Science and Mathematics equipment creates its greatest impact not simply when it is available, but when it is responsibly managed and intentionally integrated into sound teaching and learning.

Remembrance as a Revolutionary Act: Asec. Andaya Highlights Truth and Memory at Sept. 21 Flag Ceremony

EARLIER TODAY: During the weekly flag-raising ceremony today, September 21, 2026, hosted by the Personnel Section and Asset Management Section, DepEd NCR Regional Director and concurrent OIC-Assistant Secretary for Operations, Asec. Jocelyn DR Andaya delivered a timely address linking environmental mindfulness with historical consciousness.

Asec. Andaya opened her message by reminding personnel to conserve energy and water due to the onset of El Niño, which is anticipated to bring warm weather through next year. Turning to the historical weight of September 21, she warned against disinformation and whitewashing, noting that dark chapters in history must be remembered rather than forgotten.

Quoting the line, "The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting," Asec. Andaya asserted that "remembering is in itself a revolutionary act." She explained that keeping history alive serves a vital purpose: acknowledging past atrocities while honoring meaningful personal and collective experiences.

In her closing remarks, Asec. Andaya urged everyone to draw strength from both good and difficult memories to build meaningful progress individually, collectively, and as a nation.

Dir. Abesamis underscored that the foundation of effective educational leadership lies in continuous self-improvement and the deliberate cultivation of potential in others. His insights resonated deeply with attending school heads, reinforcing their role as catalysts for change within their respective institutions. The session served as a fitting capstone to the intensive program, equipping participants with the mindset to foster environments where both leaders and educators thrive. As the program wraps up, these school heads return to their divisions ready to implement strategies that prioritize growth, empathy, and excellence in service of the Filipino learner.

DepEd NCR Advances Educational Excellence at 9th Joint RExReManCom Meeting

IN PHOTOS: DepEd National Capital Region convened key education officials for the 9th Joint Regional Executive and Regional Management Committee (RExReManCom) Meeting on September 17, 2026, at Seda Vertis North, Diliman, Quezon City. Hosted by SDO Las Piñas City under the leadership of SDS Melody P. Cruz, CESO VI, the assembly highlighted regional initiatives driving learner success.

DepEd NCR Regional Director and concurrent OIC-Assistant Secretary for Operations, Asec. Jocelyn DR Andaya emphasized NCR’s vital role in elevating learning outcomes, highlighting top performances in the 2025 PISA results that establish global benchmarks and solidify the region’s standing as the nation's premier education leader.

Key agenda items addressed included budget utilization, vacant position filling updates, National Teachers’ Day 2026 preparations, and the ARAL Program. Discussions further covered regional integrated school monitoring, L&D programs, usufruct school sites, private school administrative cases, LAC sessions, and enhanced ALS curriculum.

The Final RTOT on MEIT: Equipping SDO Members for Objective and Efficient School Evaluation

IN PHOTOS: Within the fiber of the One NCR context, ensuring the effectiveness of team performance is pivotal. The Regional Office, through the Quality Assurance Division (QAD), fosters harmony, empowerment, and a network of support for its regulatory and supervisory mandate.

With the crucial intent of firming up the competence of the Schools Division Offices’ personnel on their roles and responsibilities as members of the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Inspection Team (MEIT) in view of the recognition of private schools offering the Senior High School Program, the Quality Assurance Division conducted its final activity on Regional Training of Trainers (RTOT) on the seamless implementation of DepEd Order No. 012, s. 2026, on September 16, 2026 at DepEd NCR Conference Hall.

Connecting the input from the previous and current sessions, it is noteworthy that a synthesis was shared by Dr. Julius D. Somera, PSDS from SDO Quezon City, while Dr. Lydia L. Martin, EPS and OIC of QAD, facilitated a session on Evaluation Documentation and Report Writing, with the incorporation of a simulation activity to productively apply and synthesize the knowledge gained from the capability-building activity. Supplementary to this, Dr. Richard Catain and Dr. James M. Macaranas, EPSs of QAD, managed the Integration and Planning portion, where the SDOs crafted their Division Learning Action Plan to clearly define the procedures and courses of action that they will implement after the RTOT.

The activity presented the MEIT members with a synchronized approach in the evaluation and inspection of private schools guided by the principles of objectivity, efficiency, and integrity. Truly, the whole NCR demonstrates strength through working together and sharing one passion as the standard of quality.
