UP Diliman Institute of Mathematics

UP Diliman Institute of Mathematics The University of the Philippines Diliman Institute of Mathematics is the leading institution for mathematics research and education in the Philippines.

Since 1998, it has been recognized by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education as a Center of Excellence. It is home to the country's best and more promising researchers in mathematics. Apart from offering an excellent BS Mathematics program, the Institute also grants the following graduate degrees: MA Mathematics, Professional Master's in Applied Mathematics, MS Applied Mathematics, MS Mathematics and PhD Mathematics. Formerly known as the Department of Mathematics, the Institute is the largest institute in the University of the Philippines System, with about 100 full-time faculty members supported by 8 administrative and computer staff. It nurtures about 300 undergraduate and 200 graduate students, and handles all the mathematics courses of some 5000 undergraduate students in the whole UP Diliman campus.

Mark Lois Fortin wins MS Poster Presentation Award at the 14th ASTHRDP Graduate Scholars' Conference

Mark Lois Fortin, a recent Master of Science in Applied Mathematics graduate from the Institute of Mathematics, was awarded as the Winner of the MS Poster Presentation in Category 4: Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the 14th ASTHRDP Graduate Scholars’ Conference. Organized by the Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP) under the Department of Science and Technology–Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), the conference was held on September 17–18, 2026, in Iloilo City, bearing the theme “Science and Technology that Works for the People.”

He presented his master’s thesis work, “Turing Instability in a Reaction-Diffusion Predator-Prey Model with Prey Infection and Intraspecific Predator Competition”, conducted under the supervision of Dr. Gervy Marie Angeles.

The Institute of Mathematics and the larger UP Diliman contingent were well-represented at the conference, with the university’s team also securing 2nd Place in the Fellowship Night Competition.

The Institute congratulates Mark Lois for this recognition and commends the UP Diliman team for showcasing the strength of UPD's research on a national platform.

Ma. Lailani B. Walo, 1970 - 2026

The Institute of Mathematics mourns the passing of Dr. Ma. Lailani “Lani” B. Walo, a cherished alumna and former faculty member who dedicated 23 years of service to the University.

Lani earned her BS Mathematics degree from UP Diliman in 1991. After serving for three years as an Instructor at UP Manila, she returned to UP Diliman in 1995. She went on to earn her MS and PhD in Mathematics degrees in 2003 and 2008, respectively, working on symmetry and color symmetry groups under the mentorship of Professor Rene Felix.

Throughout her years at the Institute, Lani served in various capacities, including Assistant to the Chairman for Administration, GE Coordinator, and Program Adviser for the M.A. Mathematics program. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in abstract algebra and modern geometry, as well as GE mathematics courses.

The Institute is deeply grateful for Lani’s many contributions and will remember her as a warm and thoughtful colleague and collaborator, generous in sharing her time and talents with those around her. Her students will remember her for the care and compassion she brought to her teaching.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and former students.
