Some children and teens are not âacting outâ - they are overwhelmed.
Autistic meltdowns are not tantrums. They are not attention seeking. They are not a choice. They happen when a child becomes so overwhelmed by noise, change, demands or emotions that their brain goes into crisis mode. At that point, they cannot reason, explain or âjust calm downâ.
Many autistic children/teens spend all day trying to cope - masking, holding it together, managing sensory overload, confusion, and stress. The meltdown is often what happens when there is nothing left in the tank.
Punishment, shouting or forcing eye contact does not teach anything in that moment. It only adds more pressure to an already overwhelmed child.
What helps is calm, space, reduced demands and feeling safe.
When we stop asking âwhat is wrong with this child?â and start asking âwhat has overwhelmed them?â everything changes.

Itâs NOT just play doughâŚ
Itâs one of the easiest ways to support your childâs development through play. â
Play dough is one of the most effective sensory materials in early childhood because it is open-ended, adaptable for all ages, and deeply engaging. Even better, it can be made easily at home.
đ Simple No-Cook Play Dough Recipe
⢠1 cup flour
⢠½ cup salt
⢠1 tbsp oil
⢠½ cup warm water (add gradually)
⢠Optional: food colouring or scent
Mix until a soft dough forms. Adjust with flour or water as needed.
Play dough may look simple, but the learning behind it is anything but.

â Attention and focus
â Core stability to copy notes from the chalkboard
â Can sit for longer periods of time in their chair
â Provides stability for handwriting and reading development
