Dear fellow SATS Alumni:

Greetings of peace in Christ Jesus in this season of Pentecost.

This early, the officers and some members of the alumni in its meeting last September 22, 2017 decided that there will be a SATS grand alumni homecoming on November 27-29, 2018 to be held at the seminary compound. The theme for the occasion will be; “The more we get together, the happier are we.” This is indeed a time for sharing, fellowship, and other activities that will strengthen our camaraderie as alumni.

We can now start filling up our piggy banks as there is a registration in the amount of One Thousand Pesos only (P1,000.00) to defray the cost of this gathering. Those who want to register early can send their registration to the seminary finance office and donations in any amount or in kind is very much appreciated.

The Most Rev. Renato M. Abibico, Prime Bishop, and the people of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines deeply mourn the passing away of The Rt. Rev. Robert Hibbs, former Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas who was also a former faculty member, sub-dean and dean of St. Andrew’s Theological Seminary for 15 years. At the procession for the 1998 Lambeth Conference, Bishop Hibbs cried when he saw the ECP Bishops, all of whom he had mentored, scolded, guided and passed at the Seminary. This expressed his abiding love and respect for the ECP and its people and truly the Philippine Church has been blessed by his life and ministry.

In 2001, Bishop Hibbs visited the Philippines as (then) ECUSA’s representative to the Joint Committee on the Philippine Covenant (JCPC). His wisdom and humor inspired the ECP as it was then going through difficult times as an autonomous and independent Province. His term at the JCPC saw the launching of the ECP Centennial Endowment Fund and some significant decisions agreed upon by both Churches.

We express our profound condolences to Nancy and their family, whom we also hold dearly in our hearts as they had been a part of the SATS community for many years. We pray that in this time of their great loss, they will continue to find strength and comfort in our Lord God in whose compassionate embrace we all live, heal and love. To Bishop Hibbs, may you rest eternal in His everlasting glory.

PB Abibico, Bishop Sabawil deplore attempt on Vice Mayor

The Most Rev. Renato M. Abibico, Prime Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines (ECP) and the Rt. Rev. Esteban Sabawil, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Luzon (EDNL) deplored the violence that took place in the remote town of Adams, Ilocos Norte in the night of July 5, 2016.

The incident involved the near fatal shooting of Adams Vice Mayor Eric Bawingan and the killing of his assailant. Bawingan is an ordained priest in the ECP and served the town as mayor for three terms before being elected as vice-mayor during the last elections. Adams is a jurisdiction of the EDNL where Bawingan was deployed before he took a leave to enter politics.

According to Dr. Vielmaju Wali Bawingan, the vice mayor’s wife, Bawingan was watching television with his daughter and several neighborhood children at their garage when a masked man approached him and fired his gun, hitting Bawingan on the lower chest and walking away, casually. Bawingan reached for his own weapon and fired back at the assailant. Unsure if he hit him, he entered his house and shut the door. Neighbors came to the rescue. Bawingan was brought to the municipal health center for emergency treatment before he was transported to the hospital in Batac. Dr. Bawingan is the Municipal Health Officer of Adams.
Meanwhile, members of the community found the assailant dead near the Bawingan home.. They identified him as Jun Valencia, a resident of Adams, and considered a most wanted person in the Province of Ilocos Norte. Valencia is the alleged killer of Adams Municipal Treasurer Elpidio Sy three years ago. He disappeared and was never seen in the town until this time. Scene of the Crime Operation personnel retrieved his body in the morning.

The following day Prime Bishop Abibico led a team from Quezon City to Adams. His party was joined by Bishop Sabawil who also led a team from the Diocesan Office in Tabuk, Kalinga. They also visited Bawingan at the hospital in Batac. The latest report said the Vice Mayor is in stable condition.
